The position is available from September 1, 2008. The appointment will be for three years.

Job description
China is facing serious environmental problems, and the situation may even worsen in view of predicted regional and global changes. For combating and/or adapting to global change effects on the environment in China, mitigation strategies and adaptation options have to be developed, including strategies to increase carbon sequestration and to reduce the emissions of NH3, NOx and N2O and nitrogen losses due to leaching and run-off. Within the newly established Helmholtz-CAS joint laboratory ENTRANCE (ENvironmental TRANsition of China?s Ecosystems under predicted global changes) the job holder will work on tracing the fate of excess nitrogen in a small catchment in Sichuan province, PR China, with the aid of stable isotope tracer techniques. The work includes field work for quantification of gaseous and dissolved nitrogen losses as well as laboratory work for quantification of nitrogen turnover processes. Another task wil be to develop a new analytical technique for the simulta!
neous isotope-specific analysis of the different gaseous products of nitrification and denitrification.

Qualifications
Requirements are:
- university degree in chemistry, geoecology, biology or related subjects
- practical experience in field and lab work
- good knowledge in statistical data analysis
- ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

The work will be carried out in an interdisciplinary working group. Ample opportunities are provided for addressing scientific questions and for participating in scientific publications.
We offer a complex scientific task that is associated with a high degree of work autonomy, a variety of training options, and the use of latest technical equipment. We have been granted the Total-E-Quality Award, demonstrating that gender equality is important to us.
