Job Description: Graduate research assistants wanted to support NSF funded research (Coupled Natural and Human Systems #0815966). The project, “Globalization and the Connection of Remote Communities: Environmental Implications”, addresses the impacts on human and natural systems in remote human settlements due to connection to global market, migration, and technology networks. The project’s research sites are twelve small communities of varying degrees of isolation along the Caribbean “Mosquito” Coast of Nicaragua. Students will conduct field research and write research reports, publications, and additional grants. Assistantships may start in either Spring or Fall of 2009.
Qualifications: I am looking for outstanding students with strong interdisciplinary interests. A B.S. or B.A. is required while a masters degree in a related field is preferred. Candidate’s primary academic interest should be in a relevant social science with some training or experience in ecology, conservation biology, wildlife biology, or fisheries and wildlife. Very competitive GPA and GRE scores. A strong work ethic, good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and as a productive member of a research team. Must have an interest in coupled human and natural systems (CHANS) and the integration of the natural and social sciences. International experience and fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
