Glomerular disease is the most common reason for end-stage renal disease and dialysis. So far, it was thought that the filtration barrier is maintained by a limited number of terminally differentiated epithelial cells. Recently, we have demonstrated for the first time, that glomerular epithelial cells can be regenerated from an intrinsic adult progenitor cell population.
In this project, we will isolate and characterize these progenitor cells and study the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell fate decisions and differentiation in vitro and in vivo.
Our group combines the expertise of a wide range of methods (including all standard techniques of molecular and cellular biology, basic and advanced histology, primary cell culture, lentiviral transduction, transgenic mice to genetically mark progenitor cells or differentiated cell populations, etc.) with an interest to understand of the (patho-)physiology of the glomerular filter of the kidney and to develop novel therapeutical approaches.
The project is supported by the Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung (BMBF) (start 9/2008). Additional support comes from the DFG (Sonderforschungsbreich (SFB),
Transregio) and other private and international organizations.
We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow and/or a graduate student with a completed university degree in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, medicine or an equivalent course. The current position is available for 2 years (1 year extension possible).
This project is a collaboration between the RWTH Aachen and the University of Greifswald and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The project will be performed in Aachen, Germany.
