Henry Bertie and Florence Mabel Gritton Research Scholarships,Australia
Job Description: The Gritton Scholarships are awarded to candidates enrolling in a higher degree by research and are intended to promote the knowledge and study of chemistry in relation to industry and agriculture, including chemistry connected with electrical engineering, metallurgical chemistry and chemistry in its application to mining and the winning treatment of minerals and natural products of the soil.
They are open to graduates of universities who are members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, graduates of any country who are citizens of a Commonwealth country or Australian permanent residents. The scholarship is valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award ($22,500pa in 2010).
The Henry Bertie and Florence Mabel Gritton Research Scholarships are tenable at The University of Sydney only and may be awarded at postdoctoral or postgraduate level. The following are extracts from the conditions of award pertaining to the postgraduate scholarships:
Established in 1957 by a bequest of £60,243 from the estates of Henry Bertie Gritton and his wife Florence Mabel Gritton, the scholarships shall be awarded under the following conditions:
• Each scholarship shall be named a Henry Bertie and Florence Mabel Gritton Research Scholarship.
• The object of the scholarships is to promote the knowledge and study of Chemistry in relation to Industry and Agriculture, including Chemistry connected with Electrical Engineering, Metallurgical Chemistry and Chemistry in its application to Mining and the winning and treatment of minerals and natural products of the soil.
• The scholarships may be awarded at and shall be tenable at the University of Sydney.
• The scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and appropriateness of proposed programs of research.
• The scholarships shall be open (a) to graduands or graduates of universities which are members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, or (b) to graduands or graduates of any university who are either citizens of a Commonwealth country or who are Permanent Residents of Australia. This condition must be met by the time of the Selection Committee meeting.
• A scholarship at postgraduate level:
(a) may be awarded only to an applicant who is eligible for admission to candidature for a higher degree by research and who enrols accordingly.
(b) may be awarded in two categories:
i. Gritton University Medallist Award – to be awarded, on application, to a University of Sydney Medallist who is enrolled full-time in a PhD program. The award is normally made in the second year of candidature, subject to satisfactory progress, and is for one year only. The value of the award is to be determined annually and is irrespective of the nature of any other awards the medallist may hold.
ii. Gritton Postgraduate Scholarship – valued at the APA rate* and awarded (on application) to graduates who would normally be expected to have first class honours degrees. A relocation allowance, a thesis allowance, sick leave and maternity leave are provided in line with Australian Postgraduate Award entitlements. A postgraduate scholarship shall be tenable for up to two years for a Masters degree and up to three years for a PhD degree, subject to satisfactory progress. In exceptional circumstances, a further extension of six months may be granted to PhD candidates. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the award will be deducted from the maximum period of tenure.
• Scholarships shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Chair of the Academic Board and the Deans of the Faculties of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Engineering and Information Technologies; and Science and the Head of the School of Chemistry, or their nominees.
