Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award in USA, 2015/2016

The Hertz Foundation is inviting applications for its annual graduate fellowship award to support graduate students working towards the PhD degree at one of the foundation’s currently participating schools. The graduate fellowship award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The Foundation does not support study in pursuit of the MD degree or work in descriptive biology, although it may support the PhD portion of a joint MD /PhD study program. Eligible applicants for Hertz fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.

Study Subject(s): The following is an illustrative (but not exclusive) list of the fields in which foundation has recently supported Hertz Fellows. Note, however, that it is up to each fellowship applicant to advocate to his or her specific field of interest as an “applied physical science”: Aeronautics/Astronautics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Applied Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Earth and Geo Sciences, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science and Quantitative Biology and Bio-Engineering.
Course Level: The Foundation supports graduate students working towards the PhD degree at one of the Foundation’s currently participating schools. Eligibility: Eligible applicants for Hertz Graduate Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency. College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Eligible applicants for Hertz Graduate Fellowships must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.

Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools.

Duration of award(s): The Five-Year Hertz Fellowship award (Option 1) is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the PhD degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years. The Five-Year Hertz Fellowship award (Option 2) is awarded for two years. Other fellowship is awarded up to three years.

What does it cover? Fellowship consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the participating schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools. Successful applicants have the choice of two Fellowship options:
-Option 1 – Five Year Hertz
$32,000/ 9-month personal stipend ($5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children.); Full tuition equivalent
-Option 2 – Five-Year Coordinated
$38,000/ 9-month personal stipend ($5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children); Full tuition equivalent
-Other Fellowship Period – Up to Three Years
$6,000/ year supplemental stipend ($5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children.) from Hertz; Requires Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source

Selection Criteria: Foundation screens fellowship applicants for qualities the Foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success. These include:
-Exceptional Intelligence and Creativity
-Excellent Technical Education
-Orientation and Commitment to the applications of the physical sciences
-Extraordinary Accomplishment in technical or related professional studies
-Features of Temperament and Character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional
-Appropriate moral and ethical values
-Leverage

Notification: All Fellowship applicants are notified by mail of the Foundation’s action on their application on or before April 1 of each year.
