High resolution magnetic flux density measurements by HTS dc SQUIDs
Description : Magnetic sensor applications range from primary measurements of magnetic fields, such as in biomagnetism and geophysics, and measurements of geometric quantities, such as length, position, angle and revolution, to the readout of magnetic storage media. Magnetometers based on dc SQUIDs are currently the most sensitive sensors for magnetic fields, achieving a magnetic field resolution which is about a billion times below the Earth’s magnetic field. A dc SQUID basically consists of a superconducting ring interrupted by two weak links called Josephson junctions. The magnetic flux in such a superconducting ring is quantized in units of the magnetic flux quantum h/2e. The person in the announced PhD position will prepare dc SQUIDs from the high-temperature superconductor YBa 2Cu3O7 as well as investigate the noise properties of these devices. Prof. Dr. Meinhard Schilling You are required to hold an excellent university degree (master’s or equivalent degree) in physics, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering, mathematics, information technology or related fields. The entire program is run in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Skills in German are welcome. You may be a member of and receive a scholarship from the IGSM for up to 3 years. In your first semester, you will be accepted on a probationary basis.
