Job Description: The Health Research Council (HRC) of New Zealand has made available one Ethics Summer Studentship to the University of Waikato for students to conduct research during the summer break in a health-related ethics field. The project should be a discrete piece of research that is achievable within the period (usually ten weeks) of the Studentship.

A recipient’s Supervisor will ideally have a background in health-related ethics research. Some training in research methodology and report writing should be involved, prior to or during the Studentship, and the student should be encouraged to present the results of the research at a seminar and / or by publication.
It is the recipient’s and the Supervisor’s joint responsibility to ensure that the project is completed on time. The Supervisor is responsible for obtaining Ethics Committee approval, should this be necessary.

The Studentship is for research based around the following topics:
• The storage and access of health research data
• Indigenous People and cultural responsibility in research
• Alternative Complimentary and traditional medicine
• Any other significant topic in health ethics.

REGULATIONS
The Award will be known as the Health Research Council Ethics Summer Studentship.

3. Applications will be accepted from any level of study. However, the research focus of the Studentship would lend it to applications from those who have (at least) completed the requirements of a Bachelors degree and who have already studied or practised research skills.
4. Together with their completed application form, applicants must submit a brief CV. In addition, a research proposal (including a timeline) outlining the work to be undertaken during the Ethics Summer Studentship must accompany the application. Students new to the University of Waikato should also attach academic transcripts from their previous institution(s).
5. Applicants must also ask two academic referees to send references directly to the Scholarships Office.
6. Candidates for the Studentship must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
7. Applications will be assessed on the following:
a. The field of research being undertaken
b. The presentation and feasibility of the proposal
c. Academic merit.
8. As a condition of the Studentship, the Health Research Council requires that a (four-page minimum) report be submitted at the conclusion of the Ethics Summer Studentship. This should be written in collaboration with the recipient’s supervisor. The report should outline the work undertaken while funded by the Studentship, as well as any outcomes resulting from their research (such as publications). The report must be submitted to the Scholarships Office of the University of Waikato by 21 March 2011.
9. The Studentship of $4,000 will be paid in two instalments to the successful candidate. The first instalment of $2,000 will normally be paid in December of the year of application, while the second instalment will normally be paid early in April of the following year after submission of the research report by 21 March.
10. The Selection Panel for the Studentship will consist of a representative of the University of Waikato Human Research Committee and a representative of the Scholarships Office.
11. The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no candidate of sufficient merit.
12. The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Studentship at any time and recoup any funds disbursed if it is not satisfied that the holder is following the required programme, is making satisfactory academic progress or is otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Studentship.
13. The holder of a Studentship shall have the right to appeal to the Academic Board against any decision to terminate a Studentship.
