Job Description: The Institute’s aim is to promote and facilitate high quality research in philosophy,
making it available to the widest possible audience both inside and outside the UK’s
academic community. The Institute’s activities may be grouped into four categories:
• Events – including conferences, workshops, seminar and lecture series
• Research collaborations and networks
• Fellowships – currently visiting fellowships and postdoctoral research
fellowships
• Research support – including digital resources and support for research students.

This Professorial Fellowship scheme for 2011-12 is open to applicants of professorial
or equivalent status for the purpose of supporting philosophical research in London.
Visiting Professor Fellows can be appointed for up to 3 months.
The Visiting Fellows will pursue their work in the context of the thriving intercollegiate
philosophical community of the University of London, and be expected to play an
active intellectual role in the Institute.
Successful applicants will have shown that their research can benefit from the
resources of the Institute, and that it can contribute productively to the Institute’s
research activities.

The Fellowship is open to scholars of professorial or equivalent status in any part of
the world. It should be noted that this statement of eligibility corresponds to the UK
system in which “Professor” is the highest rank of academic status, implying
achievement, seniority and depth of experience. The person appointed as Visiting
Professorial Fellow will normally hold a senior academic post, though persons who
have recently retired from an appropriate post may also be eligible.

Tenure
Fellowships may be held for a period of up to 3 consecutive months between
September and June of the academic year 2011-12. (A longer tenure may be possible,
but will not attract any financial support beyond that available for the first 3 months.)
Fellowships may be terminated (or the offer of a Fellowship withdrawn) without notice
if the Institute is not satisfied that the conditions of the appointment are being (or can
be) met.

Activities
Fellows are expected to:-
• contribute to the scholarly activity of the Institute and the wider School of
Advanced Study;
• contribute to the Institute’s seminar series;
• write a brief report for the Director at the end of the Fellowship period, for use
in internal reporting and publicity.
Publications containing results of work done with the aid of a Fellowship should be
reported to the Institute and should include adequate acknowledgement.
