Fall 2008/2009 Announcement:
The International Giessen Graduate School for the Life Sciences (GGL) and the Ph.D. Program of the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine invites applicants for
Doctoral Program in the Life Sciences.
The Doctoral Programs consist of a three-year interdisciplinary graduate course curriculum combined with an experimental project leading to a dissertation. Seminars and courses are conducted in English; German language courses are offered to international students. A Master´s degree or equivalent is required for admission. Applicants may choose between the following tracks: Man, Nutrition and Environment; Infection and Immunology; Heart, Lung and Blood Vessels; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Neurosciences; Reproduction in Man and Animals; Stress Resistance and Adaptation; Synthetic Molecules and Materials for the Life Sciences; Dental Medicine. General Application Requirements:
Application for the GGL graduate study program, starting October 2008, must contain:
- An informal letter of intent in which you describe your academic aptitude, your academic and professional interest, and your future career goals.
- A curriculum vitae with a recent photograph.
- Certified copies of all diplomas awarding relevant degrees (no originals). A master’s degree or equivalent with above-average grades (“with honours”) is required.
- Proof of proficiency in English, i.e. TOEFL (at least 560 paper or 220 computer points) or IELTS with at least 6.5 bands or CEFR B2 level.
- A letter of recommendation from your future supervisor (member of the JLU Giessen faculty) that must include (a) the topic of the proposed research and a guarantee of supervision as a doctoral student, (b) verification that employment and laboratory space is available, (c) confirmation of financial research support, and (d) a proposal for an additional individual acting as your co-supervisor (a qualified university Lecturer or Professor who must not be a member of the same JLU faculty as your supervisor). - External applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a professor of their own university who is familiar with their previous academic work and who can judge their potential as a student.
- A one-page outline of the planned research project, describing its objective, background and preliminary work plan. Applicants should seek the advice of their future supervisor.
Additional Requirements for the special track “Ph.D. Program of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine”
Students interested in the special track “Ph.D. Program of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine” should apply to the GGL (deadline below). They should note that this program is limited to projects carried out within research facilities of these two faculties and requires excellent grades for admission. The GGL Board will inform those applicants to the 2008/2009 announcement of the GGL who also qualify for this Ph.D. Program.
Admission:
Admission to the GGL and Ph.D. graduate study program will be granted by the GGL Board and the Ph.D. Admission Committee where applicable.
Unless you have registered with one of the five Giessen Life Science Faculties (usually the one to which your supervisor belongs) your admission will be on a temporary basis, only. You must, therefore, register with this faculty (Dean’s Office) for your doctoral studies immediately after the approval of your application by the GGL Board.
Note:
Students already admitted to a Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) are welcome to apply also to the GGL. They must submit all documents required as above to the GGL office.
