NDT of joined parts: infrared thermography based measurement of heat transfer properties for the detections of joint imperfections
Description : Adhesive bonding, mechanical fastening and welding are often used in the production of industrial goods. Especially in the area of transportation (automobile, train, aircraft), most structures are joined. For the properties of the structures, the defect-free state is essential. Welding and adhesive bonding are joining techniques depending on the individual process and boundary conditions which cannot be influenced in every case. So defects cannot be excluded. NDT methods allowing tests in synchronization with the assembly cycle are strongly recommended for mass production. IR thermography is known as a measurement method for the IR irradiation of surfaces. Combined with an energy source which couples energy (heat) to a probe, the IR thermography can detect defect zones by determining the differences in heat conductivity. This method depends on the emissivity of the probe surface. To compensate local temperature variations originating from emissivity in homogeneities of most specimens, a temperature correction method which can be used in industry has to be developed. Furthermore, methods for the identification of defects based on system response and new excitation sources have to be developed as well. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Böhm You are required to hold an excellent university degree (master’s or equivalent degree) in physics, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering, mathematics, information technology or related fields. The entire program is run in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Skills in German are welcome. You may be a member of and receive a scholarship from the IGSM for up to 3 years. In your first semester, you will be accepted on a probationary basis.
