IRTG 1522: HIV/AIDS and associated Infectious Diseases in Southern Africa

Under the aegis of the Graduate School of Life Sciences 11 PhD and 2 positions for MD students are open in the DFG-funded International Research Training Group (IRTG) between Germany and the Republic of South Africa. The scientific topics of this IRTG will be to translate clinical into basic research on infectious diseases. In close collaboration with laboratories from Stellenbosch University (SU) and University of Cape Town (UCT) PhD students will work on IDs caused by HIV (J. Bodem, E. Koutsilieri, and A. Rethwilm), Staphylococcus aureus (B. Sinha), Helminths (K. Brehm), Candida (J. Morschhäuser), Malaria (G. Pradel), and Leishmania (H. Moll). In addition, projects on the immunology of infectious diseases (T. Hünig and M. Lutz) and on general mechanisms of virus-induced immunosuppression (S. Schneider-Schaulies lab) will be conducted. Two positions are open for MD students to address questions in Clinical Virology (H. Klinker). An exchange programme with the South African partner laboratories and an elaborated post-graduate education programme are central to this IRTG. Speakers of this IRTG are Axel Rethwilm (Würzburg) and Wolfgang Preiser (Cape Town).

This advertisement aims to address international master or diploma students of the areas: biology, biomedicine, and natural science oriented medicine. Applications of bachelor students who graduated above average may also be considered. An excellent level of spoken and written English is required. Applicants from the European, African and South American Region are especially invited.

The funding will cover a monthly stipend of Euros 1300, an additional annual Research Grant, and funding for retreats and summer schools is also provided. Projected start of the programme is October 2008. The research will be carried out jointly at several departments of the University Wuerzburg / Germany and the South African partner laboratories. An exchange programme with the partner laboratories and an elaborated post-graduate education programme are central to this IRTG and candidates are expected to actively participate in these activities.
