The International Research Center for Japanese Studies, an inter-university research institute and one of five constituent units of the National Institutes for the Humanities of Japan, seeks to make two appointments at the level of Associate Professor. The positions are in the Center’s Office of Research Exchange, and the appointees will have responsibility for assisting in the activities of that office, which include devising and executing plans for scholarly conferences co-organized with institutions overseas. Faculty members of the Office of Research Exchange are involved in building of networks of individual scholars overseas and in Japan, in encouraging exchange of ideas and research findings, and in providing information that can be used in research on Japan. In addition to carrying on their individual research in any field of Japanese Studies, one of the appointees will be expected to take a significant share of the responsibility for editing the English-language publications of the Center, and the other appointee will be expected to take a significant share of the responsibility for maintaining relationships with universities and other institutions overseas (especially in East Asia) in which Japanese studies are conducted. Applicants for the latter position who are competent in one or more foreign languages in addition to Japanese and English will be favored.

2. Eligibility to apply:

1) Applicants must be fluent in Japanese and at least one other language.
2) Applicants must hold the Ph.D. degree or its equivalent, or be able to present evidence of scholarly attainment equal or superior to that of a holder of the Ph.D. degree.
3) Applicants should have overseas (outside Japan) experience in a position involving research on Japan.
4) In addition to the above, the following kinds of experience are highly desirable:

a) Experience in editing of written English, and/or in supervising and taking an active role in guiding othersErevision of academic writing in English.
b) Experience in a job or jobs involving the conduct of international scholarly exchange (international relations).

3. Expected date of commencement of appointment: August 1, 2008

4. Materials to be submitted by applicants:

1) Curriculum vitae. In preparing this, please use the form that can be downloaded from the website of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, http://www.nichibun.ac.jp.
2) A list of publications and research results.
3) A list showing the applicant’s record of work involving international scholarly exchange (international relations).
4) Two essays, one in Japanese and another in a language other than Japanese. Applicants for the position involving editing of English should describe their previous professional experience in this area or other experience that demonstrates editorial competence. Applicants for the position involved primarily with international scholarly exchange should describe their previous work experience in this area or the related field of international relations. The essay in Japanese should be no longer than 4000 characters, and the essay in the second language should be of comparable length.
5) Two letters of recommendation, to be submitted by the writers directly to the International Research Center for Japanese Studies. Letters will be kept confidential by the search committee.

6. Salary: Salaries of the appointees will be as established in the regulations of the National Institutes for the Humanities.

7. Hours: These positions are full-time professional (senmon gyoumugata) appointments. Exact hours worked by holders of such appointments are discretionary, but under applicable regulations the standard is eight hours per day, forty hours per week.

8. Period of appointment: Each of these appointments will have a three-year term, and may be renewed two times for three years each term. The maximum total period will be nine years. Note, however, that there is a mandatory retirement age of sixty-five at the National Institutes for the Humanities, and employment cannot continue beyond the end of the fiscal year in which the appointee’s sixty-fifth birthday occurs. The fiscal year of the National Institutes for the Humanities is April 1 through March 31.

10. Search committee procedures: The International Research Center for Japanese Studies has appointed a committee to conduct these searches. Based on review of written materials that have been submitted, the committee will interview selected applicants. Applicants will be informed of the results of the review of written materials on or about Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Interviews will be conducted during the month of May 2008 at this Center.
