Job Description:We have offices in 8 countries and engage in collaborative research with more than 200 partners in more than 25 countries. The Center is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Senior Research Scientist – Quantitative Economist
We are looking for a versatile quantitative economist to work with an existing group of development and agricultural economists to provide clear advice on future directions for fisheries and aquaculture in key development arenas, such as food security, climate change adaptation and trade policy, at national, regional and global level.
The position is initially for Three Years, and is renewable, subject to performance, future requirements of the Center, and availability of funding. It is envisaged to start in the last quarter of 2010 or beginning of 2011 at the latest.
Key Responsibilities
Within the Policy, Economics and Social Science discipline, the successful applicant will:
• Provide leadership in the application of quantitative analytical methods – econometric analysis and modeling – to fisheries and aquaculture development issues.
• Develop and lead research projects using supply-demand modelling of fishery and aquaculture products and services, with emphasis on identifying how trade can benefit poverty reduction and food security while minimizing negative impacts on environment and equity;
• Contribute economic analysis skills to projects on climate change vulnerability and adaptation
• Contribute to political economy analysis of fishery and aquaculture development programmes and potential impacts of alternative policy options
• Develop and maintain collaborative networks and partnerships with national and regional fisheries research and management organizations in WorldFish programme countries and relevant advanced research organizations to undertake the research; and
• Provide input of technical skills and research direction to multi-disciplinary team projects on fisheries and aquaculture, progressing to project leadership, management and administration, budgeting, staff supervision and coaching.

Skills and Abilities
Essential
• Technical skills in econometrics and modeling
• Good knowledge in using quantitative analysis packages (SAS, R or similar software), Microsoft Office applications;
• Demonstrated research innovation, publications in internationally refereed journals in economics and related disciplines,
• Ability to identify, conceptualize, fund and undertake relevant and innovative scientific research;
• Ability to communicate with fisheries managers, policy makers, fishers and other relevant stakeholders and convey scientific information in a format they understand;
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, particularly with social, policy and environmental scientists;
• Ability to recognize and react accordingly to work issues related / arising from different cultural contexts; and
• Proficiency in English language is essential – both in writing and orally.
Desirable
• Knowledge of economic modeling of trade flows;
• Experience with monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment methodologies;
• Proficiency in use of databases (Microsoft Access, Oracle) and GIS software (e.g. ArcView);
• Evidence of impact of own research on management or development issues;
• Evidence of ability to establish networks among development economists, coastal natural resource, environmental or ecological economists, policy actors and donors is advantageous; and
• Working knowledge of French, or knowledge of one or more African, Asian or Micronesian languages relevant to WorldFish programme countries.
Qualifications and Experiences
• PhD in Economics or related sub-discipline with at least five years postgraduate research experience in economic analysis of agriculture, trade, natural resource management or environmental governance;
• Experience in project leadership and management, including multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and multi-country projects is advantageous; and
• Demonstrated record of inter-disciplinary, partnership and team-building and the desire to work in a collaborative environment.
