I am Saumya Niroshanie Jayasooriya, 33 years of age presently working as a Training Officer at National Institute of Social Development, government academic institute, which offers social work education, social work related trainings & researches in Sri Lanka. I entered the University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka and obtained a Second Class Honours Degree for the B.A. Special Degree in Sociology (English medium). Then I completed my Post Graduate Degree in Sociology from the same university in English medium. After that I followed a Diploma course in Human Rights in English medium from the Institute of Human Rights, a well recognized academic institute in Sri Lanka.

After completing my university education, I have been served for several government institutions and the NGO sectors in the fields related to Social Development and Psychosocial work. Then I joined the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) as a Training Officer to continue my services in the field of Social Work as it was very much matched with my personal interest of working for the socially excluded needy people in Sri Lanka.

The major functions of my career in NISD involves with the work initiated to uplift the social well being of people in Sri Lanka by providing necessary trainings and social work related education. As a Training Officer, my work responsibilities are related with preparation of training modules, developing course curricula, planning and conducting training programmes. These training programmes are especially designed for the community leaders, coming from the Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and the grass root level Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) who are actively engaged with the social development activities for their capacity building to provide better contribution to the service delivery systems in Sri Lanka. Apart from that, I am teaching in the Diploma in Counselling Course, which is an 18 months professional course conducted by the institute.

Sri Lanka being a multi cultural, multiethnic developing country, its task is mainly to help those sections of the community, which are marginalized and oppressed by social and other forces. Even though the NISD is the only institute, which provides professionally qualified and managerially competent social work man power to the country, there is a big shortage of PhD level & post graduate level social work schollars among the academicians of the NISD. The major reason for this is, none of the Sri Lankan universities provide Social Work education at the PhD level as well as the post graduate level. This is supposed to be a crucial issue faced by the country at present, when they cater for the demand of professional social workers to meet up with the challenges and critical issues in the contemporary Sri Lankan society.

However, it is very difficult for a government institute like NISD to offer scholarships for the academic staff going abroad for their PhD degrees in Social Work due to its financial deficiencies. On the other way, I am not rich enough to go to abroad for higher studies spending my own money. It is compulsory for me studying a PhD Degree in Social Work to get the promotions in the institute. Considering the above matters, it would be a great opportunity for me to select for any fellowship award to follow a PhD Degree in the field of Social Work as it is very much suit with my academic needs. If I will be able to pursue a PhD scholarship in the related field, it might help me to build up my capacity in working for the vulnerable groups in the society and I can be assure of my better services to the institute as well as to the country to fill up the gap of lacking professionally and academically qualified social workers in Sri Lankan context.

At present, I am following a Master of Social Work Degree (MSW) in Social Work at the National Institute of Social Development in Sri Lanka and it is to be completed by March 2010. And my only hope is to read for a PhD degree in Social Work once I finish my MSW Degree, which I am following at present. Hence, I would be greatfull to you if you will be able to help me seeking a fellowship/schollarship to follow my PhD Degree in Social Work.

I am Mijanur Rahman from Bangladesh. I was admitted to the University of Dhaka for my BSS (Hons) in the Department of Political Science under the Social Science Faculty in the session 2000-2001. Dhaka University is the largest and famous alma mater in the country. I have completed my BSS in 2004 and MSS also from Political Science Department. I have obtained First Class in my MSS exam. And I was the representative of Bangladesh at the Youth Camp for Asia’s Future 2006, that had been held in Seoul, South Korea.
I have a career, during and after BSS and MSS, which has been marked by extensive personal efforts to contribute something both to my education institution and the development of vibrant mass media in Bangladesh. I have served in the capacity of correspondent and editor for influential magazines and newspapers. I have also edited a book entitled Monidipto Campus (Gemstones Campus) which has received positive reviews. I am also a member and research associate of the Osmany Memorial Trust to undertake a study into the life and achievements of Late General M. A. G. Osmany, Supreme commander of the Liberation Force and First Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Army. The underlying objective is to write a high quality biography of the late General.
As a Research Associate (RA) at the Center for Governance Studies (CGS), I have been involved in examining domestic political issues as well as leadership and governance. I have prepared research reports and analyses with the Chairman and other Associates. I have often been told by my colleagues and professors that I possess inquisitive disposition with the ability not only to initiate and undertake an independent research, but also flexible enough to work in a group with quite positive attitude. I do possess the skills to work in difficult and demanding situations, and very well know the benefits of perseverance and coping with setbacks.
