International Scholarship on Entrepreneurship, UK: In June 2008, the British Council partnered with Bank PHB to provide credit facilities for eligible Nigerians desirous of a UK education. A major initiative of this partnership is the setting-up of a scholarship scheme for Nigerians to undertake a training programme in the UK.

To align the scholarship scheme with the current drive within the Nigerian educational and civil society system towards entrepreneurship, the British Council has concluded discussions with the Learning and Skills Network (LSN) in the UK, to deliver a unique seven days, solution focused, and cascade-based coaching programme on entrepreneurship.

This training programme is primarily targeted at universities and non governmental organisations that have demonstrated a high level of commitment to entrepreneurship. It will equip participants to train and coach others on entrepreneurship and business development skills.

The programme will run over six months, with an initial four days training in London, two follow-up days and a final review day in Nigeria, using video conferencing and telephone interfaces. During these six months, the participants will coach others whilst also receiving coaching themselves from professional LSN business coaches on how to do this.

The programme will be accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). ILM is the UK’s premier management organisation.

Content of the initial four days in London will include:

  • Why coaching, why now?
  • What is entrepreneurship?
  • What is coaching?
  • Introduction to Solution Focused Coaching approach and model
  • Scaling as a development tool for leadership skills
  • Coaching Skills practice in pairs and triads
  • Conversational skills and tools to facilitate self awareness and learning
  • Directive vs. non directive coaching skills
  • Active listening skills
  • Reflecting back, summarising and paraphrasing
  • Powerful questions and re-framing skills
  • Intervention styles – an integrated approach
  • Self awareness and learning review
  • Getting ready for the first session, coaching tips and techniques

Content of the follow-up coaching skills days will include:

  • Review of initial coaching sessions and highlights
  • Group supervision using a reflecting team approach
  • Dealing with questions and concerns
  • Learning review and additional tools and techniques
  • Getting ready for the second and third follow up coaching sessions

Content of the final review day will include:

  • Assessment of impact and benefits of follow up coaching sessions
  • Coaching tips and techniques and additional solution focused business skills
  • Deciding how to proceed, how to embed a coaching further and how to cascade coaching and entrepreneurship

The scholarship covers the training fees of £2,244.25 only. It is expected that benefiting institutions and NGOs would meet the cost of international travel and living expenses of its staff within the days of the training programme in London.
