The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) Postdoctoral
Fellowship Program is designed to support a new generation of scholars
engaged in research on labor and employment. The program offers a unique
opportunity for recent Ph.D.s to pursue research on labor and employment
issues. Candidates with a J.D. degree who have a distinguished scholarly record
are also eligible. In 2009-2010, two fellows will be appointed at the University of
California, Los Angeles.

IRLE Fellows are selected on a competitive basis and are awarded an annual
stipend of $52,000 (plus benefits) together with $3,000 for research expenses for
the one-year (July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010) program. Fellows are expected to
teach a one-quarter undergraduate class and attend and actively participate in
IRLE colloquia, conferences and other programs during the fellowship year.

The UCLA IRLE is an interdisciplinary research unit devoted to studying, and finding
solutions for, problems of labor and employment in California and the nation. The
Institute was founded in 1945 and has played an important role in the intellectual
life of the university ever since. Through its support for graduate student and faculty
research it has made numerous contributions to scholarship in various social science
disciplines, and its faculty and students also have engaged in key national policy
debates on employment and labor issues. Through its conferences, colloquia and
other public programs, the IRLE also nurtures a lively intellectual dialogue on the
UCLA campus and in the wider community.

 The Program

The IRLE Postdoctoral Fellows Program was established to encourage highly qualified individuals to pursue postdoctoral scholarship examining labor and employment issues in an interdisciplinary setting. Fellows will have access to the full range of university resources (computers, faculty, libraries, etc.) and will work with an IRLE-designated faculty mentor in an environment that fosters interdisciplinary learning and collaborative research.

 Eligibility and selection criteria
