­Applications are invited for 5 Ph.D. fellowships in Development Studies within the ISS research program Global Development and Social Justice. The Ph.D. fellowships are for a maximum period of four years, starting in 2018.

The Ph.D. fellowships are available only for citizens of countries that are not part of the European Economic Area. Candidates from African, low-income or low-middle-income countries are especially encouraged to apply.

Founded in 1913, it is currently one of the biggest universities of the Netherlands with a student population of 23,000 and a research community of circa 1,400. Scholars and students in seven faculties and two institutions work on global social challenges in the areas of health, wealth, governance and culture.

Eligibility

For all fellowships, applicants should submit the following:

• The Ph.D. fellowships are available only for citizens of countries that are not part of the European Economic Area. Candidates from African, low-income or low-middle-income countries are especially encouraged to apply.
• Proof of having obtained a first-class or excellent MA Degree (if applicable, a degree with GPA of at least 3.70) in one of the Social Sciences or equivalent, comprising at least four years of study at an internationally recognized university or Institute for Higher Education, as evidenced by certified copies of degrees and diplomas, and by copies of academic transcripts.
• A research proposal in one of the areas indicated above (approx. 10 pages, 5000 words). For further guidelines and examples of proposals,
