IST Fellowship Programme for Overseas Postdoctoral Applicants in Austria, 2018

Applications are invited for ISTFELLOW programme of two years appointments. Fellowship is awarded to qualified applicants from all over the world who are interested in spending the postdoctoral stage of their scientific research career at IST Austria.

The institute has set up a program for exceptional postdoctoral researchers, which is partially funded by the European Union, ISTFELLOW.

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is a young international institution in Klosterneuburg near Vienna that the basic scientific research and postgraduate training are dedicated to.

Scholarship Description:

  • Application Deadline: M
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing a postdoctoral program at IST Austria.
  • Study Subject: The program is intended for postdocs interested in the areas that are represented by the faculty at IST Austria. As the research portfolio of the Institute continues to branch out into other areas in the coming years, including physics, chemistry, and mathematics, so will the ISTFELLOW program. At all times, in keeping with the spirit of the Institute, ISTFELLOW will give preference to scientists who have a strong interest in cross-disciplinary approaches.
  • Language: The official language of the institute is English. In order to help fellows integrate into the host country, IST offers German-language courses on campus.
  • Number of Scholarships: The indicative number of foreseen fellowships to be funded is 12 for each Call unless otherwise announced.

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants from all over the world can apply for the fellowships.
  • Entrance Requirements:
  • Applicants must fulfil the Marie Curie mobility requirements in order to be selected.  Applicants must either be relocating to Austria or, if they currently live in Austria or have previously lived in Austria, candidates are only eligible if they have been in Austria for a total of fewer than 12 months during the 3 years previous to the deadline of the respective Call.
  • Before issuing of a contract of employment by IST Austria, successful applicants may be required to provide official evidence of their eligibility (e.g. work contracts, utility bills, visa stamps, etc.)
  • English Language Requirements:  Candidates must be proficient in written and oral English. Applicants can submit TOEFL/IELTS and GRE scores. The IST Austria TOEFL code is 6384.

  • How to Apply: The mode of application is online. In addition to the application for the scholarship, the applicant must submit the following documents:-
  • Step 1: Create an account
  • Register online by entering the name and e-mail address using the link above. The applicant will immediately receive an e-mail with the link to their user account.
  • Step 2: Confirm registration
  • Step 3: Recommendation letters
  • Enter the names and e-mail addresses of 3 referees who have taught or collaborated with them or followed or supervised their work and are therefore able to evaluate their academic and research performance.
  • They will receive an e-mail directly from us with the subject “IST Austria – Request for Letter of Recommendation” with a link to an online platform.
  • Before submitting their referees’ details, please make sure that they are willing and available to provide their recommendation within the respective deadline. Keep in mind that their recommenders need time to write and submit the letters.

Benefits

  • IST plus fellows receive 2-year, full-time employment contracts with an internationally competitive salary and full social security coverage. In addition to this salary, every ISTPlus fellow will receive at the beginning of their fellowship a single paid relocation allowance amounting to EUR 2.000. Furthermore, a single additional allowance of EUR 1.000 is paid to researchers with families.
  • Research Environment: The ISTplus program offers a stimulating and interdisciplinary environment. Research group leaders are at the forefront of their respective fields and have been decorated with many awards and grants for their scientific achievements, among them more than 30 ERC grants. Labs are equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation and Scientific Service Units offer facilities and know-how on an international level.
  • Beyond academia: IST Austria established a network of partners from non-academic institutions in industry and the public sector.   • Career Development: Workshops related to career development and transferable skills are available to ISTplus fellows. Career counselling is also available to ISTplus postdocs.
  • Family Services: IST Austria has an onsite daycare.  Reserving a spot in the daycare is subject to availability.
  • Housing: Depending upon availability, a room in the on-campus guesthouse or apartments can be rented, giving incoming postdocs time to find more permanent accommodation.
