Job Description: The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) is a two-year program intended to help Japanese nationals obtaining Ph.D. degrees in macroeconomics and preparing them to work as economists at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The scholarship is funded by the government of Japan and administered by the IMF Institute with assistance from the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Annually, up to seven scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students with a record of high academic achievement. The government of Japan expects that all JISP scholars apply for IMF employment upon completion of their studies.

Eligibility and Application Procedure

To be eligible, an applicant must be:

* A Japanese citizen.
* Able to obtain a Ph.D. by age 34.
* Entering the 1st or 2nd year of his/her Ph.D. As an exception, scholars in their 3rd year might be considered for a one-year scholarship award.
* Studying at, or applying to, a Ph.D. program in macroeconomics at a university that is located outside of Japan and has a strong doctoral program in macroeconomics.

The application is available online at www.iie.org/jisp. It must be completed in English and include the following:

* a statement of not more than 500 words, focusing on the applicant’s background, career goals, and interest in working as an IMF economist;
* a complete university transcript for the applicant’s prior studies and, if already a graduate student, a current university transcript;
* applicant’s GRE and TOEFL or IELTS scores;
* a copy of one application to a Ph.D. program; and
* two reference letters.

Scholarships are awarded in the spring, for studies starting in the fall of that same year. Candidates must apply directly to universities for admission. The deadline for receipt of scholarship applications is January 31.

Please note that no exceptions can be made regarding the field of study, scholar’s nationality, or university location.

Academic Program

* JISP scholars must continue an approved course of study and maintain high academic standards, passing all mandatory and qualifying examinations.
* Scholars usually complete the majority of the course work in the first two years of Ph.D., with the remainder of their studies devoted to researching and writing a dissertation.
* Dissertation subjects should focus on macroeconomics and topics relevant to the work of the IMF, such as: international economics, international finance, monetary economics, public finance, and labor economics.
* Selected scholars must attend an orientation program at the IMF in Washington DC, shortly before they begin their studies at their respective university.
* One year before the conclusion of their doctoral studies, scholars return to the IMF for a summer internship lasting 10-13 weeks.

Benefits

The JISP covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study including:

* full university tuition and fees;
* medical insurance;
* annual book allowance and monthly living allowance;
* selected travel expenses; and
* paid summer internship.

To cover the remaining years of study, JISP scholars are expected to secure another source of funding, usually through Research or Teaching Assistantship at their university.

Application Deadline: January 31, 2011.
