Job Description: The Scholarship shall be known as a John Drake Memorial Scholarship.The number of Scholarships to be offered shall vary from year to year. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand. Each John Drake Memorial Scholarship 2011 will have a maximum value of $5,000 each and be tenable initially for one year with a maximum tenure of three years. The Scholarship will be credited in two payments directly towards tuition fees to Auckland University during August and December
( for A an d B Sem ester pa p e r s respectively) of the year in the student is awarded the Scholarship. To receive the fees credit for the Scholarship students are required to pass all papers in the semester which the fees credit is to cover. In special circumstances, students who do not achieve the required academic standard may appeal to the Selection Panel for special consideration. Extension of the tenure of the Scholarships is dependent on satisfactory academic progress and Recipients of the Scholarships do not need to re-apply in order to be eligible for an extension of the tenure of the Scholarships but will be automatically considered for reawarding, for the second and third years of their tuition.The offer of the Scholarship is subject to the candidate fulfilling all requirements for admission to the University of Auckland and enrolling in a full-time programme of study in the year of tenure.
The initial selection criteria will be based on academic merit, sporting potential and involvement in community and club activities. The Selection Panel will comprise of trustees of the John Drake Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Selection Panel reserves the right to permanently or temporarily withhold payments of the Scholarship at any time should academic or rugby performance not be satisfactory.
Application
Applications will close on 9 September annually of the year preceding tenure. Along with a completed application form, applicants are to include a C.V. which highlights the
student’s eligibility in terms of the following selection criteria:
- Sporting achievements
- Personal achievements
- 3 references
- Personal statement of why the applicant believes they should be the beneficiary.
(Roughly 500 words)
Applicants enrolling at the University of Auckland for the first time in the year of tenure are also to include certified copies of the most recent secondary school results which are available, and proof of New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency. The Scholarship may be recognized at an annual function organized to promote scholarships more widely throughout the University. The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no candidates of sufficient merit.
In exceptional circumstances a Scholarship may be shared. The successful applicant shall keep a player’s diary which will be posted on the AURFC website and regularly updated.
