JSPS Invitation Fellowships for International Applicants in Japan, 2016

Applications are invited for JSPS invitation fellowships available for the researchers of all countries having diplomatic relations with Japan. JSPS conducts two programs (a short- and long-term program) under the Invitation Fellowship heading.

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) carries out programs that provide overseas researchers who have an excellent record of research achievements with an opportunity to conduct collaborative research, discussions, and opinion exchanges with researchers in Japan.

These programs are intended to help advance the overseas researchers’ research activities while promoting science and internationalization in Japan,

Candidates must have obtained their previous degree and they must be be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Course Level: Fellowships are available for carrying out research through long-term and short- term visits.

Study Subject(s): All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included under this program.

Scholarship Award: The fellowships will be awarded as follows:
-Long-term [IF01]: A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS’s regulations), ¥387,600 per month maintenance allowance; overseas travel insurance and a research support allowance is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application is made by the host researcher through his/her institution;
-Short-term [IF02]: A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS’s regulations), ¥18,000 per day maintenance allowance; overseas travel insurance and a research support allowance is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application is made by the host researcher through his/her institution;
-Short-term S [IF03]: A round-trip business-class air ticket (based on JSPS’s regulations, ¥42,000 per day maintenance allowance; overseas travel insurance and a research support allowance is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application is made by the host researcher through his/her institution.

Eligibility:
Long-term [IF01]
: As a rule, researchers who hold a full-time position in an overseas research institution and satisfy the following requirements:
-Be a citizen or a permanent resident of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner). To be eligible, researchers of Japanese nationality residing overseas must have lived in the other country for at least 10 years and been actively engaged in research in that country throughout the period.
-Overseas researchers in a position equivalent to a university professor, associate professor or assistant professor in Japan as of 1 April 2017
-Overseas researchers who do not have above-mentioned careers but received their doctorate degree prior to six years or more as of 1 April 2017 and are continuing to do research in a university or non-profit research institution.
Short-term [IF02]
: As a rule, researchers who hold full-time positions in an overseas research institution and satisfy the following requirements:
-Be a citizen or a permanent resident of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner). To be eligible, researchers of Japanese nationality residing overseas must have lived in the other country for at least 10 years and been actively engaged in research in that country throughout the period.
-Overseas researchers in a position equivalent to a university professor or associate professor as of 1 April 2017.
-Overseas researchers with an excellent record of research achievements.
Short-term S [IF03]
:
-Be a citizen or a permanent resident of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner). To be eligible, researchers of Japanese nationality residing overseas must have lived in the other country for at least 10 years and been actively engaged in research in that country throughout the period.
-Overseas researchers who are Nobel laureates or recipients of similarly high-level international prizes with exceptionally outstanding records of research achievements and who currently occupy a leading position in their subject field.

Nationality: Researchers of all countries having diplomatic relations with Japan are eligible for these JSPS Invitation Fellowships.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: Candidates must have obtained their previous degree and they must be be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Test Requirement: No

English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

Supporting Material: Required documents are:
-Long-term application form to be filled out by the host researcher
-Long-term application form to be filled out by overseas researcher
-Short-term application form to be filled out by the host researcher
-Short-term S application form to be filled out by the host researcher

How to Apply: Host researchers, except for those under Pathway fellowships, are required to use JSPS’s web application system when applying for fellowships. Applications under this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan via the head of his/her university or institution. Overseas researchers wishing to participate in the program are advised to establish contact with a Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in their field and to ask him/her to submit an application. Applications must be made using JSPS’s prescribe forms.

Application Deadline: The application deadline is for 2nd recruitment (Short-term and Short-term S) will be accepted from April 26 till May 6, 2016.
