JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
The four Colleges invite applications for twelve Junior Research Fellowships which will normally be tenable for three years from 1st October 2008. For more information regarding Fellowships on offer this year, please click here. Junior Research Fellowships are initial (normally) post-doctoral positions appropriate to the start of an academic career.
To access the Junior Research Fellowship application system, you are required to register. This enables you to save your application and revisit/edit it before submitting it, or to check the status of your application. It is recommended that you register as soon as possible.
Applications and referees’ reports must be received online by Monday 19th November 2007. Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted. Please make sure that your application and your referees’ reports reach us before the closing date. Register by clicking here.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Junior Research Fellowships are open to graduates, women and men, of any university who have recently or are about to complete their doctorates.
- Successful candidates will normally have submitted their theses between 1st March 2006 and 1st March 2008.
- The statements of research should be not more than 1,000 words outlining the work candidates would submit in support of their applications, if requested, and the research they propose to do if elected. Please note that it will be read by people outside as well as within the candidate’s own discipline and should therefore be intelligible to scholars in other subjects.
- Written material is not required at this stage, but it is essential to have written work readily accessible, because those candidates whose applications are short-listed for further assessment will be invited by 14 January 2008 to submit a copy of their chosen written work electronically, plus three hard copies, which should be received no later than Thursday 24 January 2008. Please ensure that your contact details on your application are kept updated at that time (preferably giving your e-mail, mobile, or telephone details).
- The Colleges are concerned with the quality, rather than quantity, of the work submitted but, in order that an informed assessment may be made, it is important that sufficient material should be available. As a rough guide, it is recommended that the work for submission to external assessors should be around 20,000 words (or about one quarter the length of a PhD thesis), and in no case more than 40,000 words.
- Submitted work should normally be in English but if candidates intend to submit work in a foreign language, they should give notice by indicating this on the Application Form where they enter the title of the work.
- Applications, including two referees’ reports, must be submitted on-line by 5pm on Monday, 19 November 2007.
Application Timetable:
- The application process begins on 29 October 2007.
- Applications and two reports from independent referees, both of whom should be familiar with the candidate’s research work, must be submitted through the web site, and received by the administrator by Monday 5pm on 19th November 2007. One of these referees should normally be the supervisor. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- Candidates will be selected to send samples of written work by Monday 14 January 2008.
- Candidates will be called to interview (by Fitzwilliam, New Hall or Trinity Hall) week commencing 10 March 2008.
- Elections will be made no later than Friday 24 March 2008.
- Successful candidates will enter into their Fellowships on 1 October 2008.
