Applications are invited for the KJ Bathe SEMC doctoral scholarships available for South Africans and scholars from other African countries to study at the University of Cape Town. Candidates who in 2015 will be registering for the first or second year of a Ph.D. degree at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for these awards.

The scholarships are each valued at R100,000 per annum and are tenable for one year. The scholarship will not extend beyond 3 years of full-time Ph.D. registration. The application deadline is 30th September 2014.

Eligibility

  •  Applicants must have:
    a Master’s degree in Engineering Mechanics, Structural Engineering or related fields
    applied for and secured a place to study towards a Ph.D. degree in Structural Mechanics, and
    secured an academic supervisor within the Structural Engineering & Mechanics Group at UCT.
  • Candidates who in 2015 will be registering for the first or second year of a Ph.D. degree at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for these awards. Students who will register for the third year of the doctoral degree in 2015 are ineligible.
  • Successful candidates will be permitted to hold other scholarships or bursaries to a total value of no more than R250,000. The university reserves the right to recover the amount in excess of R250,000 from this award.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Students of South Africa and scholars from other African countries can apply for these doctoral scholarships.

Duration of award(s): The duration of scholarships is one year. However, at the end of the first year of the award, renewal of the scholarship will be considered for a further one or two years, up to the end of the first three years of Ph.D. registration. The scholarship will not extend beyond 3 years of full-time Ph.D. registration. Renewals will only be made on the evidence of satisfactory progress.

Selection Criteria: Eligible applications will be considered by the Chair of SEMC and Head of the Structural Engineering & Mechanics Group at UCT, together with a sub-committee. The main criteria for selection are the academic record of the applicant and the soundness of the research proposal.

  • Interested candidates are required to submit the following:
  • a letter of interest indicating the intended area of study;
  • a summary of the proposed research (no longer than three A4 pages);
  • a certified copy of a South African ID or an international passport;
  • a full CV which includes publications and/or details of conferences attended;
  • certified copies of all academic transcripts (please do not send in any certificates); and
  • references from at least TWO ACADEMICS who have taught or supervised the candidate in a postgraduate degree.
