MARGARET PARKINSON SCHOLARSHIPS

in association with the

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF NURSING CHARITABLE TRUST

Margaret Parkinson SRN SCM (1906-1993) spent her entire working life in the nursing profession.  She did her training at the Middlesex Hospital in London, qualifying as a State Registered Nurse in 1928.  She was then in attendance to the late Lord Savile at his country residence, Rufford Abbey in Nottinghamshire, until his death in 1931.  When she returned to London she worked for a time at the Royal Heart Hospital and then spent the time during the war years as a district nurse in the Walthamstow area of the East End.  She qualified as a State Certified Midwife in 1944.   In 1946 she opened her own nursing home in Wimbledon which she successfully ran until its closure in 1966.  She then worked for a period at the Wimbledon Hospital and subsequently took on private nursing work before finally retiring in 1972.

The sculptor Frederick Mancini, as a token of his thanks and appreciation for her care in nursing his wife, gave to her the prototype of the life-sized figure of Florence Nightingale which he sculptured for St Thomas’ Hospital in London and which stands there today.   In 1987 she presented this prototype to St Margaret’s Church, East Wellow, Hampshire, where Miss Nightingale is buried and it may be seen there today.  A friend of Miss Parkinson (who wished to remain anonymous) left funds for the maintenance and repair of that church and the establishment of these Scholarships.
