COWI A/S invites applications for postgraduate researchers to work in the Major Bridges Departments section for Structural Dynamics, in the field of Non Destructive Evaluation for the maintenance of large traffic structures. The positions are granted by COWI and the European Commission, under the FP7-PEOPLE-ITN project SMARTEN (http://www.smarten-itn.eu/), on Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment, and are expected to lead to a PhD at the end of the 4-year project time-frame. The SMARTEN project aims to educate and train the next generation of researchers, engineers, research managers and directors in the field of Smart Management for Sustainable Human Environment, using Non Destructive Evaluation technologies. It involves some of the key European research organisations in the fields of Infrastructure Reliability and Management, Sensor Technology and Communications.

COWI’s group for Structural Dynamics is involved as a European level expert institution in the fields of structural dynamics, structural health monitoring and bridge maintenance. Right now the grope is part of the project teams designing the Messina Strait Bridge in Italy, the Femern Belt Bridge to connect Denmark and Germany and the Qatar – Bahrain causeway. The involved research team consists of chief specialist and senior researchers with many years of consulting experience in the development of structural monitoring systems and bridge management systems for many of the largest infrastructure projects in the world.
COWI (www.cowi.com) is a leading consulting engineering company within bridge and tunnel design. The company headquarter is in Copenhagen, Denmark. COWI employs more than 6000 persons worldwide working with the fields of engineering, environment and economics.

Research topics relevant to the applicants

The research topic will be within Work Program 3.Non Destructive Evaluation. This WP will focus on training and research in the area of non destructive evaluation to develop a strong intersectional skills base. Strong interaction between the five sub programs in this package is required as well as the other WPs of the SmartEN project to achieve integration between these specializations within a smart proactive management framework. Interaction with industry is also pivotal to the success of this program in order to focus training and research towards the needs of end users.

Research Theme 1: Optimum Sensor Locations and Requirements for NDE
Research Theme 2: Combined Monitoring and Inspection Systems
Research Theme 3: Assessment and Long Term Performance Modeling
Research Theme 4: Performance Model Updating Based on Sensor Information
Research Theme 5: Damage identification

Responsibilities for one of these positions include conducting research in the above fields leading to publications in top international academic journals and conferences, and providing teaching support to various graduate courses related with the expertise of the successful candidate. Applicants must show evidence of research potential in their respective field, as well as collegial spirit.
The working language at COWI is English; therefore, fluency in English is a requirement.
Due to the project grant regulations, students having spent more than 12 months in Denmark over the past 3 years are excluded.

Compensation includes:
(a) Competitive monthly salary,
(b) PhD tuition expenses,
(c) travel grants to attend conferences, in addition to travel related with project requirements.
