Master Student Position University of Leipzig
A master/bachelor student position is available in the junior research group „Mechanisms of Cell Migration” (leader: Dr W. Ziegler) at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research (IZKF) Leipzig, University of Leipzig, Faculty of Medicine. Our group is engaged in basic research in the field of cell migration and cytoskeletal architecture.
Adherent cells establish cell-matrix contacts via direct interaction of transmembrane receptors with the extracellular matrix. Intracellularly a multi-protein complex – the focal adhesion complex – connects the transmembrane adhesion receptors with the cytoskeleton thereby providing a mechanical link to the extracellular matrix. We are interested in the regulation of protein dynamics and ligand interactions in these cell-matrix contacts.
The master/bachelor thesis work will focus on the cytoskeletal protein talin, specifically in the characterization of ligand binding site activity in talin.
Experimental approaches will include cell culture work and immunofluorescence microscopy in combination with molecular biology (PCR, cloning) and biochemical techniques (protein purification, in vitro binding assays).
There will be an option to extend the work in the context of a PhD studentship later this year.
