A consortium of the Universities of Glasgow, Nottingham, St Andrews, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Strathclyde, and the West of Scotland
Suitably qualified applicants from any branch of the Social Sciences and Humanities are invited to apply for Masters studentships and Postgraduate language diplomas for study in the 2009-10 academic year.
Applications are invited for the one-year MSc in Russian and East European Studies, University of Glasgow and for intensive one-year Postgraduate diplomas (PgDip) in Russian, Polish, Czech Serbian/Croatian and Slovene language.
Applications should send a covering letter, CV and two references to Ann Mulholland, CRCEES Administrator at the address below by 27th February 2009.

My career began as a planning expert during the last four years and now planning &Training Service head since January 2007 at the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State Bureau of Finance & Economic development, a government organization that has the responsibility to propose the regional development plan, prepare, and administer the regional budget; and strengthen the financial capacity of the region and also co-ordinates socio-economic policy implementation of the region. The bureau is striving to meet the aforementioned duties and responsibilities.
As a task force member in the socio-economic policy, I explored these issues thoroughly, never quite satiating my appetite for more information and knowledge. I found my integral role in policy planning process to be the most valuable and worthwhile experience I’ve had my career to date.
From my experiences at Bureau of Finance &Economic Development, I have learned how I want to shape my future. I believe that attaining the MSc degree is the cornerstone to achieving my goals. It will give me the academic background necessary to succeed in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of macro-economic policy. It will improve decision-making skills necessary for optimizing performance. I graduated from Federal University of Technology Akure Nigeria, from the department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering in
2007. After my two years post graduate experience my target is to make my master degree on the area of Information Technology
(IT). The reason for my master degree in this area is the low technical know-how in Nigeria society compare to developed
countries like United Kingdom. As a young person who is being aware of this fact, the main need of the Nigerian society is a
profession that can solve these technical problems in which Information Technology is a major player.
I know I am in need of external funding in order to improve my intellectual asset. I had applied for admission in University of St
Andrews Scotland in the area of Information Technology to be commenced this September 2009 but no fund to continue the
process so I have differed it till September 2010.
Currently I am working with an IT firm Uphill Technology Ltd Abuja as a trainee Engineer and have participated in many
Information Technology works like Networking of computer, seminars and workshops sales and repair of computer systems
throughout major places in Nigeria. The primary goal of obtaining this Master is to develop my country Nigeria from the shackle of
poverty of different kinds mentally, socially and economically. This project is the re-unification of Nigeria Technology which I know
to achieve by focusing on Information Technology which comprises computer and communication. I aim to bring Nigeria closer to
Europe and help all Nigerian to build a culture of Technology in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Also with my study I aimed to
improve youth’s direct relations with Technology, by visiting Nigerian Universities, increasing awareness and improve Information
Technology in our youth.
This will greatly reduce issues such as drug addiction and sexual discrimination and so on.
I will also form a working group to improve student’s rights and employment prospects in Nigeria. The working group will involves
many participants on my IT seminar which will include the office of the President, the Ministry of Education, state planning boards
and universities in Nigeria when i come back. It aims to develop long-run sustainable Information Technology policies through
targeted hands on solutions.
In this one year study period, the university that I have applied to make my masters is located at St Andrews, Fife KY16 9AJ,
Scotland, United Kingdom. Being aware of this fact, St. Andrews University is of high academic reputation, I believe it will help me
to understand Information Technology better. Spreading the ideas that I will learn or the linkages that I will make while studying
abroad would benefit Nigerian in many ways. I believe in a country like United Kingdom.
