Postdoctoral position in computational epigenetics / epigenomics (Saarbrücken): The Max Planck Society is the premier basic research branch in Germany. The Max Planck Institute for Informatics is devoted to Computer Science and Information Technology. In 2001, the institute established a Computational Biology department under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Lengauer.

Current research activities of the department address topics from medical bioinformatics, with a focus on viral infections (HIV, HCV), polygenic diseases and cancer. Methods work covers the prediction and analysis of protein structure and function, the analysis of protein-ligand interactions (molecular docking) and the functional analysis of high-through genomic and proteomic datasets. On this foundation, the department has recently established a research initiative on computational epigenetics, addressing the growing interest in deciphering the role of epigenetic regulation in development and disease using bioinformatic methods.

The Department of Computational Biology at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics is a partner in a larger Computational Biology Center in Saarbrücken (http://www.zbi.uni-saarland.de), together with groups from the University of the Saarland, where several curricula in Computational Biology are being offered. Furthermore, the department cooperates with other Max Planck Institutes, notably in the areas of biology and medicine as well as with universities, genome centers, and pharmaceutical / biotech companies.

The Department of Computational Biology offers an interdisciplinary research environment with exciting challenges on novel biological data and leading-edge expertise in one of today’s most dynamic scientific disciplines. We are looking for people that are highly qualified and motivated to join our interdisciplinary team.

We are offering the position of a postdoctoral researcher in computational epigenetics / epi-genomics, with a focus on improving cancer diagnosis and therapy. A strong background in genomics, gene expression analysis or systems biology is required. We are especially interested in modeling the role of epigenetic deregulation in diseases such as cancer. We are involved in inter-disciplinary projects toward this end (http://www.cancerdip.eu/). Expertise in machine learning, statistics and software engineering is a plus. The candidate should have strong interest in collaboration with biomedical researchers. The position requires an internationally competitive research record in computational biology.

Applications should include the usual information such as curriculum vitae, motivation letter, copies of certificates, a list of publications and email of two or three references. Please refer to “postdoc in computational epigenetics” in your application. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. Qualifications being equal, precedence will be given to candidates with disabilities.
