Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Politics and East Asian Studies
The Politics Department and East Asian Studies Program at Oberlin College invite applications for a noncontinuing faculty position as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years beginning in fall 2009 and will carry the rank of visiting assistant professor. The position is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The person selected will teach courses in the general area of East Asian politics, ideally with a focus on either Japan or the Korean peninsula. The substantive areas within East Asian politics in which courses will be taught is open, but there is special interest in gender politics, race and immigration politics, domestic party politics and institutional reform, new social movements, and regional international cooperation and conflict. The incumbent will teach one course each semester for the four semesters of the appointment (for a total of four courses) including one introductory regional survey course, an intermediate-level course, an upper-level seminar in the area of the incumbent’s research expertise, and a module course coordinated with a scholarly symposium.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. degree awarded no earlier than 2006 or in hand by July 1, 2009. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
The Department of Politics has twelve full-time faculty positions and approximately 100 junior and senior majors. Information about the department can be found athttp://new.oberlin.edu/politics/. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to work with Oberlin Shansi, an independent non-profit organization (http://www.oberlin.edu/shansi).
