Job Description: Michael Baldwin was a staff member at The University of Waikato at the time of his death in 2003. He had taught for a number of years in Papua New Guinea – at the institute currently known as the University of Goroka – before his appointment to the Centre for Foundation Studies at The University of Waikato. This scholarship commemorates Michael’s commitment to teaching and to assisting others in their educational endeavours, and was made possible through the generosity of the Baldwin family.

The scholarship is open for application to students who are citizens of South Pacific nations (This does not include New Zealand of Australia). Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial support in order to undertake tertiary study.

Candidates must be current or intending students, who will be enrolled in an approved full-time programme of study at The University of Waikato in the year of tenure of the scholarship. There is no restriction on the field of study of the candidate, but preference may be given to candidates who are enrolled in a teacher education programme.

REGULATIONS
The scholarship will be known as the Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship.
2. The scholarship is open for application to students who are citizens of South Pacific nations (however, citizens of New Zealand or Australia are not eligible for this scholarship).
Preference may be given to students who are citizens of Papua New Guinea.
3. Preference may also be given to applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial support in order to undertake tertiary study.
4. A student’s eligibility in regard to points 2 and 3 (above) will be determined by the sponsor of the award.
5. Candidates must be either enrolled or intending to enrol in an approved full-time programme of study at the University of Waikato in the year of tenure of the scholarship.
6. There is no restriction on the field of study of the candidate, but preference may be given to candidates who are enrolled in a teacher education programme.
7. The scholarship will have a value of up to $10,000. Payment of the Scholarship will be made to a successful applicant in the year of the award. Payment will be in two instalments (at the beginning of the academic year and early into the students 2nd semester of enrolment).
8. Applications for the scholarship will be considered every two years (however, if no award is made the scholarship will be open for application the following year). A recipient of the scholarship is able to reapply after a period of two years.
9. The selection of the scholar will be made on the basis of written applications. Such applications are to include a personal statement indicating how the scholarship will benefit the candidate’s particular circumstances and aspirations. The application must give certified details of the candidate’s academic history, and be accompanied by copies of two recent testimonials – one who can assess the candidate’s likely academic progress in the university, the other who can attest to the candidate’s personal qualities.
