The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation is inviting applications for MINERVA fellowship programme available for EU and Japanese professionals (trade and economic analysts, academics, scientists, civil servants). This is a 6 months in-house fellowship scheme worth 1700 EUR/month in Japan which is designed to support its research and policy analysis of EU-Japan economic and industrial issues. The Research fellow will undertake research work on a selected priority topic of the Centre, which should result in a consistent policy report (20-30 pages) to be owned by the Centre. The deadline for October 2014- March 2015 slot is 15th July 2014.

Study Subject(s): The Research Fellow will undertake research work on a selected priority topic of the Centre, which should result in a consistent policy report (20-30 pages) to be owned by the Centre. Priority topics are:
– Tokyo Olympics 2020 – Preliminary Business Opportunity Analysis for European companies.
a. Current situation and perspectives on EU-Japan trade and industrial relations.
b. Post-Fukushima business and industrial cooperation opportunities in Japan- focus on promising niche sectors and industries (e.g: disaster management services, clean energy, construction materials and technologies, smart cities etc.)
c. European SMEs’ internationalisation to Japan:
– Obstacles and Opportunities for European SMEs in Japan (specific case studies/sectors).
– Mapping of European SMEs active in Japan.
d. Sectoral topics:
-Sustainable Building and Construction Sector in Japan – Opportunities for European companies (key words: market analysis, regulatory aspects, trade and investment aspects including NTBs, energy efficiency, and technological cooperation).
– Japanese Biotech cluster and industry landscape – analysis of business opportunities.
– Japanese Space and GNSS industry –business and investment potential for European companies.

Eligibility:
-This fellowship is addressed to EU and Japanese professionals (trade and economic analysts, academics, scientists, civil servants) with a proven interest in Japan and EU-Japan cooperation from multiple perspectives (trade/market access, industrial policy issues, R&D, etc…).
-Minimum requirements: EU or Japanese citizenship, university degree, strong interest and motivation in Japan and EU-Japan relations.

Scholarship Open for International Students: EU (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and UK) and Japanese professionals can apply for this MINERVA fellowship.

Scholarship Description: The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation proposes a 6 months in-house fellowship scheme in Japan, designed to support its research and policy analysis of EU-Japan economic and industrial issues. The Research Fellow will undertake research work on a selected priority topic of the Centre, which should result in a consistent policy report (20-30 pages) to be owned by the Centre.  Apart from research on a pre-determined topic, the Research Fellow would be expected to support the daily analytical activities of the Centre which includes media monitoring, policy briefings, seminar reports, etc.

Duration of award(s): MINERVA Fellowship is awarded for six months.

What does it cover? The fellowship is worth 1700 EUR/month (payable in JPY) and covers a period of 6 months: October 2014 – March 2015. The fellowship is expected to cover basic daily expenses and accommodation in Tokyo. A Research Fellow selected from outside Japan, will receive an additional travel subsidy of up to 1000 EUR. The Research Fellow shall take out a personal insurance policy for the whole duration of the Fellowship to cover:
-Travel,
-Personal health,
-Accident insurance,
-Third-party liability (private life): insurance against the loss of, or damage to, his/her personal property, and insurance against any injury, loss or damage suffered by a third person for which the Participant is personally liable.
This policy shall be taken out prior to the beginning of the fellowship. (The Centre undertakes to provide assistance in this matter, if the Participant is an EU national not residing in Japan). The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation will provide assistance in obtaining the visa for Japan as well as various logistical help (finding accommodation etc).

Selection Criteria: The following elements will constitute an advantage in the selection process: previous professional experience with Japan, an already advanced study/research on one of the priority topics, Japanese language abilities. The short-listing will be done by the two general managers of the Centre on the basis of the CVs, covering letters and work/research plans submitted.
