MS Graduate Research Assistantship –Understanding Freshwater Mussels in Michigan Using Landscape Genetics. Biology Department, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will conduct a two-year research project on the landscape genetics of freshwater mussels and their host fish in watersheds of the lower peninsula of Michigan. They will work with Dr. Dave Zanatta (www.cst.cmich.edu/users/zanat1d/) and Dr. Daelyn Woolnough (www.cst.cmich.edu/users/wooln1d/) to answer questions about the recovery of this highly endangered group of animals and ultimately lead to a comprehensive thesis. Research assistantships will be available throughout the summers and teaching and/or research assistantships will be available through the school year.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant should be highly motivated and have a B.S. in fisheries, ecology, biology, zoology or closely related field and should be able to work independently in the field and lab. The applicant should be able to tolerate various weather conditions and demonstrate attention to detail. Previous experience in Geographic Information Systems and/or lab experience using microsatellites DNA, PCR, genotyping would be beneficial but not a necessity. Field experience, such as experience with identification of fish, aquatic invertebrates or unionid mussels, is also desirable.

Minimum academic qualifications include 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 system), GRE scores must be sent to CMU graduate school for approval. Salary: ~$15,000 per year plus tuition.

Closing Date: Until filled. Selection will be made by May 2009. Applications received prior to April 15, 2009 will be given full consideration. The candidate will be expected to begin by June 15, 2009.
