MSc Scholarships for Palliative Care-The Samuel Sebba Trust
Applications are invited for these new scholarships to enable UK-based students with an interest in conducting research into pain to study for the MSc in Palliative Care at King’s College London, part-time over two years, commencing January 2010.
King’s College London is committed to opening doors to excellence for gifted and talented students and these scholarships will benefit students who for financial reasons would otherwise be unable to attend. Each scholarship will fund the course tuition fees, travel, accommodation and books.
The scholarships are generously supported by the Samuel Sebba Trust through Cicely Saunders International (CSI). CSI was established in 2002 and is the only charity dedicated to research, education and support in the field of palliative care.

To tell you my short history, Meseret Assefa was born in 11/11/1986 in a small village in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. From his father Assefa Gemeda and his mother Yadatu Gemeda. Meseret’s parents named him Nagaras, an African word that means better change. Little did they know how fitting his name would be! Meseret Assefa, a boy from an African village, grew up with a good dream. For a time being Meseret is unmarried he has a program to marry after take his masters. However to fulfill his dream in his home country there is a shortage of school and budget then he currently looking for scholarships provided for minorities who want to grow up their academic knowledge and skill like him.
At the age of five Meseret is the first person in his family to go to school. At school, Meseret was given the name Labata, word that means (as of Afan Oromo language version) next generation. He attended school by going 17 km from his home land since there is no near school to his home. After many struggle of school life Meseret join University of Gondar in 2005 and in 2007 graduated by Economics under Faculty of Management Sciences and Economics. At January 22, 2008 he was employed by Ethiopian government in Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation Company as Junior Planning Officer.
However, the telecom industry in Ethiopia is quite competitive and often tough to break into many with high hopes don’t survive the pressure. Others seem to handle pressure well, but lack creativity, guts or discipline. There is also a great need for these individuals to remain focused on the “big picture” and lead the company toward its goals. Lastly, one must continue to grow and improve personally and professionally to reach the top.
Luckily for Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation, I many of the necessary qualities to succeed in this tough business. Hence, to develop my self into a fine leader and a constructive worker.

My name is Tariku Nigatu,male, married and 27 years old from Ethiopia. I have my first degree in Public health from Alemaya Univerity in 2004. Since then I have been working in different organizations at different posts.I have worked as a clinician,nursing school tutor and as a program support officer. Currently, I am working in an international NGO that works in the area of HIV. Recently I was delegated to make a study tour visit to African Palliative care Association (APCA) and Hospice Africa in Kampala Uganda. I greatly appreciate the initiative taken by Dr. Anne effort from Hospice Africa to add life on the days of patients . She also came in to Ethiopia and gave a lecture on palliative care for many health proffessionals including myself. Through all these, I have learnt the fact that Ethiopia has very little persons trained in Palliative care. Even in Black lion Hospital, the largest refferal hospital of the country, there is no palliative care services being rendered. People are dying in agony. not peacefully. There is reservation by physicians to prescribe morphine to their patients what so ever is the degree of pain. Morphine is not also available in the pharmacies if some proffessionals want to order too. Therefore, cancer and HIV patients in Ethiopia don’t usually die in Dignity.
So, I request, for any one who can help, palliative care training to be given to Ethiopian proffesionals who when back home will train thousands who eventually care for millions.

Now I am working in Axum University as an assistant lecturer & I do have a certificate on introduction to Environmental Health introduction to occupational hygien from Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Bowling state University, Ohaio state, United states. Well,my name is Aryanti,and I’ve served as a dental surgeon in one tiny public health service in Sumatera,Indonesia for 4 years.To tell you frankly, I’ve so many patients that seem lost of hope because of their sickness and nothing I could do about it.
That makes me dreaming,that someday I will work at one place that serve patients in one comprehensive way,including treating people by heart,and then I can affect people by doing it.I think,maybe this scholarship can make me reach this dream.

this is nigus age of 25 from mekelle university college of veterinary medicine having Diploma in Animal Health Assitance (AHA) from Addis Ababa University in 2003, working as field worker for the first two years and the last four years here in Mekelle University college of Veterinray Medicine as laboratory assistance and since July 1,2009 as graduate assitance.
