MSc/PhD positions available for September 2008
3 MSc/PhD positions available for September 2008
Dundalk Institute of Technology
Following the success of researchers at the Centre in securing funding from the Council of Directors under their Strand 1 programme, applications are invited from enthusiastic Life Science graduates to join a dynamic team focused on investigating the mechanisms underlying the control of smooth muscle. Based in state of the art laboratories at DkIT, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to receive training in electrophysiology, molecular biology, Ca2+ imaging and immunohistochemistry.
1. MSc/PhD Position at the Smooth Muscle Research Centre
Candidates are invited to apply for a 2 year research M.Sc position to study role of interstitial cells of Cajal in the mouse urethra.
This study will be the first to provide a detailed account of the electrophysiology of urethral smooth muscle and interstitial cells in the mouse. We hypothesize that these ‘Interstitial Cells of Cajal’ (ICC) act as the primary pacemakers responsible for controlling the bulk smooth muscle. We will study the role of these cells by using single cell patch clamp, confocal Ca2+ imaging and whole tissue Ca2+ imaging in normal and genetically modified mice that lack ICC.
The successful candidate will work with the Smooth Muscle Research Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology, County Louth, Ireland. We are a dynamic team of researchers who occupy newly built laboratories with state of the art facilities. The proposed project will provide full training to a student in electrophysiology, Ca2+ imaging and molecular biology techniques and will therefore make them extremely marketable in a future scientific career.
The position is funded for 2 years and will provide the successful candidate with living expenses, fees, travel to domestic and international meetings as well as all of the running costs of the project. Subject to satisfactory performance during the first two years, candidates will be offered funding for an additional year in order to complete a PhD.
Applicants should ideally have a 2:1 or 1st Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) in physiology, biochemistry, biomedical science or another appropriate biological science subject.
Applicants should forward a full CV including the contact details for two referees and detail any research experience gained to date to Dr Mark Hollywood: mark.hollywood@dkit.ie
Closing date 1st August 2008
Starting date 1st September 2008
Due to the source of funding, we can only accept applications from EU nationals.

2. M.Sc/PhD Position at the Smooth Muscle Research Centre
Candidates are invited to apply for a M.Sc position to study role of novel ion channel modulators on smooth muscle function. This study will use a combination of whole cell patch clamp, single channel recording, confocal Ca2+ imaging and whole tissue Ca2+ imaging in isolated cells to ascertain how these channel modifiers alter tone.

3. M.Sc/PhD Position at the Smooth Muscle Research Centre
Candidates are invited to apply for an M.Sc position to study role of interstitial cells of Cajal in the upper urinary tract.
Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are specialized cells which are found in many smooth muscle tissues. In the gastrointestinal tract they are known to serve as electrical pacemakers which generate spontaneous electrical slow waves. Electrical slow waves spread from ICC to smooth muscle cells and the resulting depolarization initiates calcium ion entry and contraction. Slow waves organize gut contractions into phasic contractions that are the basis for peristalsis. ICC have recently been reported to be present in the upper urinary tract, however their functional role in this tissue is still unclear. The aim of this project is to investigate if ICC are involved in the regulation of peristalsis in the upper urinary tract. The successful candidate will work in the Smooth Muscle Research Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology, County Louth, Ireland. We are a dynamic team of researchers who occupy newly built laboratories with state of the art facilities.
