Job Description: These bursaries are available to students from the Northern Cape Province who wish to study towards a National Diploma in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering. Successful applicants will start with semester one of the National Diploma in January 2011. Funding after semester one is dependent on satisfactory academic performance.

Successful students will be notified by 24 December 2010.
1.1.Selection criteria
1.Applicants must be South African citizens and must be from the Northern Cape Province. Preference will be given to candidates from the towns of Carnarvon, Williston, Brandvlei and Van Wyksvlei.
2.Successful applicants must be prepared to undertake their studies at a University of Technology that offers a National Diploma in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering.
3.Successful applicants must be prepared to start with their studies in January 2011.
4.Applicants must have passed Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science and English and must, as a minimum meet the admission requirements set out by the University of Technology.
Note: Award of a bursary is not guaranteed even if a student meets all the criteria listed above. The SA SKA Project reserves the right not to accept any application in part or in whole. The decision of the SA SKA Project will be final and no correspondence will be entered into after the decision.
1.2 Conditions of bursary award
1.The award of an SA SKA Project bursary to a student will be based on academic performance, determined through the evaluation of the student’s latest Grade 12 results. Students must include a certified copy of their latest Grade 12 results with their applications. Other selection criteria will include leadership qualities and previous award of prizes and honours.
2. A National Diploma consists of a theory component which is divided into four six- month semesters (referred to as S1, S2, S3 and S4) and a work experience component which consists of two six-month semesters (referred to as P1 and P2). If a student successfully completes the theory component and the practical component, the student qualifies with a National Diploma.
2.1.Successful bursary applicants will initially be funded for S1 of the National Diploma only. Further funding for S2, S3 and S4 will be dependent on satisfactory academic performance and the availability of funds.
2.2.Successful applicants who complete S1 to S4 with funding from the SKA SA Project will be required to complete their practical training (P1 and P2) through the project. This training will take place in Gauteng and / or Cape Town and / or the Karoo.
2.3.On completion of studies supported by means of the bursary, students will be required to take up technician posts if offered by the SA SKA Project for a period not exceeding two years. These posts will be based at the MeerKAT facility in the Karoo.
2.4.On completion of the studies supported by means of the bursary, students are required to submit proof that they have been awarded a National Diploma.
1.2 Structure of the funding of the SA SKA bursary for study towards a National Diploma
1.The SA SKA Project bursary covers the cost of the following associated with your studies for S 1 at the University of Technology :
a.The application fee
b.he registration fee
c.The cost of accommodation at the university’s residence
d.The cost of all meals at the university’s residence
e.The cost of tuition for S1
2.In addition the SA SKA Project will provide you with an allowance of twelve thousand rand (R12, 000) for the duration of your S 1 studies. This allowance must be used for any additional expenses. This includes your travel from the University of Technology and back again. The allowance will be paid to you via the University of Technology, at the start of the semester (January 2011).
Applications must be submitted via the Financial Aid Office at the university where you intend registering for the National Diploma, to reach the NRF by 30 September 2010.
