Newton Abraham Studentship in Biological and Medical Sciences, Oxford
NEWTON ABRAHAM STUDENTSHIP IN MEDICAL SCIENCES
The Christopher Welch Board has agreed to be responsible for the selection for a Newton Abraham Studentship in Biological Sciences or a Newton Abraham Studentship in Medical Sciences if one is made available in 2009. All applicants for the Christopher Welch Scholarship will also be considered for an appropriate Newton Abraham award if one is made available.
Newton Abraham awards support postgraduate study in Biological Sciences or in Medical Sciences, and, if one is made available in 2009, it will be tenable at the University from the beginning of Michaelmas Term 2009.
Candidates for a Studentship in Biological Science musthave applied for admission for postgraduate study, normally in one of the following departments: Biochemistry, Plant Sciences, and Zoology.
Candidates for a Studentship in Medical Science musthave applied for admission for postgraduate study in one of the following departments: Experimental Psychology; Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG); the Dunn School of Pathology; Pharmacology, or in one of the Departments or Sub-departments of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine.
It is a condition of the awards that the studentships are held at Lincoln College.
Newton Abraham Studentships pay all college and University fees at the rates for “home” students.
They provide a maintenance grant (for 2008-9, is £12,940 per annum).
They are awarded for a period of up to three and a half years.
Departments in which Newton-Abraham studentships are held may claim funding in support of the incidental costs of research of up to £4,000 per student per annum for the duration of the studentship. Incidental costs include, for example, fieldwork, attendance at conferences, generic skills training, industrial placements, and any other costs agreed with the department. They may include £850 per annum towards the costs of graduate skills training (this is the amount provided by the UK Research Councils for skills training).
Candidates wishing to be considered for studentships must:
1. complete the University’s application form for graduate study and submit this to the Graduate Admissions Office by 23 JANUARY 2009 All supporting materials required by the admitting departments must also have been submitted by 23 JANUARY 2009 (e.g. references, academic transcripts, and a current CV). The University’s Graduate Studies Prospectus and details of how to apply are available at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/gsp/
AND
2. complete the Christopher Welch Scholarship/Newton Abraham Studentship form, and submit this form to the department in which they wish to work by 23 JANUARY 2009 at the latest.
Completed forms, countersigned by the head of the department, must be sent by departments to arrive with the Secretary to the Christopher Welch Fund, MPLS Divisional Office, 9 Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PD before 11.00 am on Monday 23 February 2009.
It is currently intended to hold interviews with short-listed candidates on Thursday 19 March 2009. Candidates should ensure that they will be available on this date as it will not be possible to arrange an alternative. The offer of a Newton Abraham Studentship will be subject to approval by the Board of Electors to the Newton-Abraham Visiting Professorship in Medical, Biological and Chemical Sciences
