Job Description: Cancer bionanotechnology is an ever-growing area of materials and biology research, but several challenges remain. The effectiveness of much current chemotherapy is limited by the adverse effects of cancer treatment drugs on healthy cells. The proposed research will tackle this problem by employing colloidal magnetic nanoparticles which can ‘get close’ to a biological entity of interest. Assembling a number of building blocks with different functionalities will form one key aspect of the project. In this way, one could provide a multimodal platform allowing for both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This multi-disciplinary project will involve inorganic and organic chemical synthesis of precursors, metal oxide nanoparticles and surfactant moieties. Structural characterisation (x-ray diffractometry, electron microscopy) and biomedical investigations (cancer imaging) will also be undertaken.

Applications are welcome from highly motivated students, with a minimum 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline. The PhD student will be based in the group of Dr. Serena Corr at the University of Kent and will work in close collaboration with Dr. Stefano Biagini. Work will also be carried out with the CRUK-EPSRC Cancer Imaging Centre.

The 3 year studentship provides full fees of applicants eligible for Home/EU fee status and a yearly stipend at the EPSRC standard level (currently £13,590)

The School of Physical Sciences has a strong, active and cutting-edge research environment which achieved excellent results in the latest Research Assessment Exercise – the School’s Functional Materials Group came second nationally in their discipline.

Further information: To discuss the project further, please contact Dr. Serena Corr (s.a.corr@kent.ac.uk [11]). Relevant recent literature on this topic may be found on our group webpage: http://astro.kent.ac.uk/~serena/ [12]

Closing Date: 20th July 2010

How to apply: Formal applications should be made online through the University website: https://records.kent.ac.uk/external/admissions/pg_application.php [13] [13]and details on the application process may be found here: http://www.kent.ac.uk/studying/postgrad/apply/checklist.html
