PhD Scholarship, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Fetal metabolic programming

Job Description: Research conducted during the past decades has shown that periods of undernutrition during fetal development may induce a phenomenon termed fetal metabolic programming. This is associated with increased risk later in life of developing metabolic disturbances like type 2 diabetes and obesity. Evidence is now accumulating to suggest that a fetal nutritional insult also in the form of overnutrition is a significant risk factor predisposing for postnatal development of metabolic disturbances and early onset obesity. Childhood obesity is an increasing problem and it is estimated that by 2010 more than 40% of European children will be overweight or obese.

With reference to the project manager and within the framework of a newly founded Centre for Fetal Programming, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties related to experimental studies with sheep as models for humans. The aim is to study the age related and tissue specific developments of metabolic disorders later in life as a consequence of fetal programming in response to gestational overnutrition as compared to undernutrition. It is furthermore the aim to study how the diet in early postnatal life may influence the phenotypic expression of metabolic disorders later in life in an individual who has undergone adverse programming during fetal life.
