PhD Fellowship, Chemical ecology of the Honey Mushroom Armillaria mellea: Investigations on the mode of action of melleolide antibiotics,
March 8, 2009JSMC invites applications for a
PhD Fellowship (Ref.No. JSMC?35/2009) on the topic
Chemical ecology of the Honey Mushroom Armillaria mellea:
Investigations on the mode of action of melleolide antibiotics
The melleolides are the natural products of the genus Armillaria (honey mushroom) which includes both aggressive tree pathogens and wood degrading species. Some microorganisms are transiently or permanently inhibited by the melleolides, while others are completely resistant. To understand the principles of Armillaria chemical communication and the mechanism(s) microorganisms utilize to disrupt the communicative processes by intrinsic resistance, this JSMC?project will rely on biochemical and chemical approaches, as well as on fungal molecular biology.
We expect:
- a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (e.g., Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical
Sciences, Biology). Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
- high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
- creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
- an integrative and cooperative personality
- very good communication skills in English (instruction language at JSMC)
We offer:
- a highly communicative atmosphere within a scientific network providing top?level research
conditions

well as generous research funding
- a comprehensive mentoring program with efficient supervision by a team of supervisors
