Phd Fellowship in Developing Algorithms For Kinetics of Methane Production During Anaerobic Fermentation Of Biomass, Denmark

Job Description:

The Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake research on the development of kinetic models for methane production during anaerobic fermentation of biomass. Emphasis will be on developing algorithms for the kinetics of biogas production and study digestibility of biomass related to chemical composition and methane production. The objective is to develop algorithms for assessing ultimate methane productivity and kinetics of methane production of biomass. This objective will be supported by developing on-line and real time assessment of biomass composition using spectroscopic analytical methods.

The PhD fellow will carry out research on the relations between biomass composition and methane productivity during anaerobic digestion. Digestibility and optimal processing will be related to biomass composition measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) or Raman spectroscopy. The PhD fellow will work in the interdisciplinary research field of chemistry, biotechnology and environmental engineering.

The PhD fellowship should have a master degree (MSc) in environmental engineering, biotechnology or chemical engineering. Advanced level of speaking, writing and reading English is required. The applicant should demonstrate research potential as reflected by for instance the grades obtained in the master’s thesis. Previous research experience is considered as additional advantage.

Application must include the following:

• Detailed CV, including list of publications (if any)
• Copy of diploma
• At least three contact persons as his/her references
• A brief one-page proposal for study plan

Application, salary, etc.:

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

For further information on the position and conditions of employment please contact the head of the institute Prof. Lars Porskjær Christensen ([email protected]).

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1. October 2008 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

The university encourages all persons interested in the position to apply, regardless of their age, gender, religious affiliation or ethnic background.

Students must have either graduated from a Scandinavian MSc program, an MSc program in English, have English as their native language, or alternatively have passed a language test at the level demanded by University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Engineering (minimum scores: IELTS 6.5 points; Paper-based TOEFL 575 points; Computer based TOEFL 230, Internet-based TOEFL 88 points).

Please send 3 copies of the application, marked “Position No. 104003” and enclosures, including publications on which the applicant wishes to rely, to University of Southern Denmark, The Faculty Secretariat, The Faculty of Engineering, Campusvej 55, DK-5230 Odense M, Denmark. The application must reach the University not later than 15th of September at 12.00 hours.

Employment starts: 15 October, 2010
Closing date 15 September, 2010 at 12 noon
