PhD fellowship in Geophysics of the Earth’s lithosphere, Denmark
PhD fellowship in Geophysics of the Earth’s lithosphere
Department of Geography and Geology
University of Copenhagen, Denmark
The Solid Earth Geophysics Group at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, is an internationally acclaimed team of scientists that focuses on structure of the lithosphere and upper mantle processes. At present, our friendly multinational group includes researchers, postdocs, and PhD fellows from Denmark, Russia, U.K., New Zealand, Sweden, Egypt, Italy, and USA. The communication language in the group is English.
Programme introduction: Detailed information on the structure, composition and secular evolution of the lithosphere is pivotal to understanding many of the processes in the Earth’s interior. Seismic and gravity methods, that are most common for remote lithospheric studies, determine variations of seismic elastic and anelastic parameters and density.
These physical parameters are strongly dependent on pressure, temperature, composition, and physical state of lithosphere. Thus, understanding of lithospheric structure necessitates a join interpretation of the entire set of data provided by different techniques used in Earth sciences (seismic, gravity, thermal, petrologic, complemented by laboratory measurements).
We seek a candidate for the following PhD project (project leader: I. M. Artemieva):
“Structure of the lithosphere of Siberia from complex analysis of geophysical data”
In this project we focus on the relations between the lithosphere structure, mantle processes and geodynamic evolution of the Siberian craton and the West Siberian Basin. We particularly aim (i) to refine the existing models on the crustal structure of Siberia, (ii) to distinguish structural and compositional heterogeneity of the lithospheric mantle using experimental and theoretical relations between seismic velocities, temperature, composition, and density of the upper mantle, (iii) to link the present-day lithospheric structure to past geodynamic processes in the region. The numerical modeling will be constrained by data on the crustal structure, surface topography, seismic tomography, lithospheric temperatures, and gravity, complemented by petrologic data.
Qualifications: We seek an outstanding individual with a recent MSc, or equivalent degree in geosciences or in physics, who can demonstrate an excellent background in Geophysics and an interest in Earth processes and in geophysical, geological, and petrologic observations. Experience with numerical modeling is appreciated. Fluency in English, both verbally and in writing, is a necessity. Knowledge of Russian is an advantage due to a large number of scientific
publications available in Russian only.
Terms of employment: The successful candidate will be offered a full-time PhD position for a period of three years,
contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a PhD degree and scientific
publications.
The position is open for appointment from May 1st 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
It is a prerequisite for the appointment as a PhD-fellow, that the person concerned can be registered as a PhD-fellow
according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Executive Order no 18 of 14. January 2008. The
applicant should have a Master’s degree or a corresponding degree in geology, geophysics, or physics.
The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month (approximately 3,100-4,000 Euro/month).
How to apply: Applications, including (i) a motivation for the position, (ii) a statement of your research interests, (iii) a curriculum vitae, (iv) a short abstract of the MSc-thesis or equivalent, and (v) the names, e-mails, telephones and
addresses of 2-4 referees, must be submitted as one pdf file by e-mail to: job@geo.ku.dk with a copy to: irina@geo.ku.dk.
Deadline for applications is April 29, 2009; however, the search might continue beyond the deadline until a successful candidate is found.
Further information can be obtained from the project leader, Prof. Irina M. Artemieva, email irina@geo.ku.dk. You

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified
candidates regardless of personal background.
