JSMC invites applications for a
PhD Fellowship (Ref.No. JSMC?32/2009) on the topic
Monitoring the Signalling State of Individual Bacteria by means of
Optical Spectroscopic Technologies

The focus of this research project is to implement a novel approach to investigate the signalling state and the
response of bacteria to external stress factors using optical spectroscopic technologies. The use of a segmented?flow
lab?on?a?chip device in combination with surface?enhanced Resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS) will enable the
study of the signalling state of bacteria as a response of environmentally induced stress.

We expect:
- a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (e.g., Biology, Physics, Chemistry,
Medical Sciences, etc.). Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
- hands?on?experiences with lasers and / or optical spectroscopic techniques and / or preparation of
plasmonic nanoparticles are welcome.
- high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
- creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
- an integrative and cooperative personality
- very good communication skills in English (instruction language at JSMC)
