PhD Fellowship, Mutual interactions of the marine green macroalgae Ulva sp. and its bacteria, JSMC, Germany
March 8, 2009JSMC invites applications for a
PhD Fellowship (Ref.No. JSMC?37/2009) on the topic
Mutual interactions of the marine green macroalgae Ulva sp. and its bacteria
We are aware that macroalgae change their shape in the presence of certain bacteria. Recent studies suggest that bacteria release diffusible chemical compounds (morphogens) that influence the growth of macroalgae. Working in an interdisciplinary group, this project aims to unravel the chemical structure of bacterial signal molecules and their impact on the morphogenesis of the green macroalgae Ulva sp. Using modern approaches in analytical chemistry (e.g. UPLCMS/ MS, GC?MS, NMR) paired with laboratory bioassays in phycology morphogenetic compounds will be isolated and their structure elucidated. The ecological relevance of these morphogens that mediate algal?bacterial cross?talk will be
explored in field experiments.
We expect:
- a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology).
Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
