PhD Graduate Position, The Institute Planetary Research at German Aerospace Center in Berlin
The Institute Planetary Research at German Aerospace Center in Berlin is searching for a
PhD Graduate Position, 19,25 Hours/Week in context with theHGF Alliance “Planetary Evolution and Life”
The position will be funded by the Helmholtz-Society through the Research Alliance “Planetary Evolution and Life”. The Alliance is led and managed by the Institute of Planetary Research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Berlin.
Description of Research Task:
Applications are invited for a PhD graduate position in the Department of Extrasolar Planets and Atmospheres, Institute of Planetary Research at DLR Berlin.
Earth is the only habitable planet known in our solar system. However, Mars may also have been habitable in the early stages of its evolution. After life emerged on Earth, it altered the atmospheric composition from a probably carbon dioxide dominated atmosphere, as still found on Mars today, to an atmosphere including significant amounts of oxygen.
We plan to investigate the atmospheres of Earth and Mars during different stages of their evolution to understand the conditions needed for the development of life.
The aims of the research are:
- Apply and develop atmospheric models to investigate the concept of habitable conditions in the solar system and beyond
- Simulate atmospheric conditions during the early evolution of Earth and Mars
- Simulate radiative transfer and spectroscopic appearance of Earth- and Mars-like planets at different stages of their evolution
The successful candidate for this position will work at the DLR-Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin and cooperate with our Alliance partners at the FU und TU Berlin, MPI für Sonnensystemforschung, MPI für Biogeochemie, Institut für Methodik der Fernerkundung des DLR und IWF, Graz.
Desired Qualification:
- Candidates must have a university degree in physics, meteorology, or astrophysics
- Comprehensive experience of working with numerical atmospheric models with coupled photochemistry is required as well as knowledge of programming languages (Fortran)
- English and German are working languages in the research department
Required Qualification:
