The number of people with dementia in the UK is growing and is going to place considerable demands on health care and related services. Currently, people with dementia are not generally encouraged to take an active part in managing their condition. The Government’s National Dementia Strategy calls for earlier diagnosis and treatment for people with dementia. The overall aim for this work is to create a self-management intervention to promote and support self management for people with early onset dementia which will positively impact on patients quality of life, activation and other health outcomes. This will be achieved by the following:

  • Systematic review of the evidence for self-management for people living with early onset  dementia.
  • Identify the self-management support needs of people with dementia by conducting a survey and focus groups with  people living with dementia and carers and health care professionals who support them.
  • Develop and evaluate a pilot self-management program for people living with early onset dementia through qualitative in depth interviews and focus groups and the administration of standardised quality of life and self-management  outcome measures.

Candidate specification

The ideal candidate will have a good undergraduate degree in Psychology and may also have a Masters in an applied psychology or health related discipline. Methodological expertise must include good qualitative analysis skills.
