PhD in Semiconductor Nanostructures,University of Sheffield -Department of Physics and Astronomy,UK
Applications are invited for a three year PhD position in physics and applications of semiconductor nano-structures. The topics that we will develop in the next few years and which will form this PhD project are: nano-NMR-based non-invasive imaging of semiconductor nano-structures, optical manipulation of nuclear spins in III-V semiconductor nano-structures, single electron spins in benign environments (with a focus on carbon nano-tube quantum dots), near-surface quantum dots and carbon nano-tubes for plasmonic applications and nano-sensing.
Start date is 1st October 2010.
The successful applicant will fabricate novel opto-electronic devices comprising semiconductor quantum dots and carbon nano-tubes and will conduct a range of advanced optics experiments on these structures. Overall an individual hired to this post will receive high level training in advanced physics and device physics, and in nanoscale device fabrication. For this post, it is desirable to have background in solid state physics, however, applicants with other backgrounds are welcome.
The research will be conducted in our well-equipped laboratories in Sheffield, with opportunities for collaborative work in several leading laboratories around Europe. Device fabrication will be carried out in modern high spec clean rooms of the National Centre for III-V Semiconductor Technology in Sheffield.
