International PhD Position: Analysis of Hypothalamic Connectivity Development and Function in Zebrafish, Germany

Job description:The hypothalamus is an evolutionarily ancient integrative center, which orchestrates complex adaptive behaviors that regulate numerous physiological functions including stress responses, food intake, thermoregulation, fluid homeostasis and reproductive behavior. Despite their physiological importance, the underlying circuits and connectivity in hypothalamus are poorly understood due to their enormous complexity in mammalian system. The zebrafish offers an excellent experimental system for hypothalamic connectivity analysis since the transparent embryos contains much fewer neurons making it easier to analyze and manipulate them. In the current PhD thesis, we will investigate the development and function of select hypothalamic circuits using transgenic zebrafish that allow selective labeling and manipulation of these neural circuits. We will generate comprehensive circuit map using multi-fluorescent transgenic zebrafish and analyse its development using live in vivo confocal microscopy. Further we will analyze the function of these hypothalamic neural circuits by manipulating the neurons using genetic and optogentic tools. The effects of such manipulation will be anlayzed by a combination of histology, imaging and behavioral assays.

Independent, creative and with practical lab work experience in area of neurobiology
