offers the PhD position “Extreme storms and coastal evolution under accelerated sea-level rise”
in a vibrant research group within the department of Physical Geography and the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU). The aim of the PhD project is to quantify future mid-latitudinal coastal change under the global-warming induced prospects of changes in surge levels, storm-wave characteristics, and accelerated sea-level rise, with an emphasis on dune erosion along the Dutch North-Sea and French Atlantic coast. The work will be based on existing projections of the wind speed and direction of the 17-member ESSENCE ensemble, dynamical downscaling to surge levels and wave characteristics using state-of-the-art operational surge and wave models (in cooperation with the Dutch Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute KNMI), and a recently developed coastal storm-impact model. The candidate is expected to publish in international peer-reviewed journals, write a
(paper) PhD thesis within the project duration of four fears and assist some teaching.
Highly motivated candidates with an MSc degree in Physical Geography, Physical Oceanography, Climatology, or another, related field are encouraged to apply. Candidates require good quantitative skills.
Previous experience in wave or morphodynamic modeling is an asset but not a condition. The candidate is offered a fixed-term four year appointment as PhD researcher with one year probation. The gross monthly salary starts at EURO 2,042.- and is expected to increase to EURO 2,612.- in the fourth year of appointment. Secondary benefits include a pension scheme, flexible employment conditions, a holiday bonus and an end-off year bonus.
