PhD Position: CO2 Capture Technology: The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Norway
PhD positions within CO2 capture technologies: The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Energy and Process Engineering invites applicants for PhD research fellowships in the area of CO2 capture technologies within the Trondheim CO2 Capture Laboratories.
Would you like to work in one of the largest and best CO2 capture research groups in the world, please respond to this announcement. The areas of research are:
# Absorption technologies: Post and Pre-Combustion CO2 capture by chemical absorption is one of the most promising routes today. However, high energy requirement in the capture process reduces the power plant efficiency significantly. In the development of new solvent systems crucial points are liquid phase speciation(composition), degradation and corrosion properties. We need one PhD candidate devoted to this area. The person should be familiar with some of the common analytical techniques such as GC, GC-MS, LC, LC-MS, FTIR, or similar. This position is linked to a collaboration between Det Norske Veritas AS and NTNU and also to collaboration with the University of Regina, Canada.
# Combustion: A combustion zone near a high-temperature membrane surface has the important feature of lowering the partial pressure of species consumed in the combustion process, leading to a larger driving force across the membrane. The integration opens up for novel applications, with a potential of process intensification. The objective is to develop the theoretical foundation by describing the phenomena related to gas and ion transport as well as solid/gas interaction, a DNS-based computational model, and an experimental verification of models for combustion near or on a membrane surface. The mathematical modeling will consist of a multi-dimensional model for advection, diffusion, reactions, and thermal radiation at and near the surface. A corresponding model for the solid-phase is required. This position is linked to the NTNU project CCERT – CO2 Capture; Enabling Research and technology, funded by the Research Council of Norway and Det Norske Veritas AS, Shell Technology Norway AS, StatoilHydro AS, and Metso Power OY.
For more information about the positions, please contact professor Hallvard Svendsen, email: hallvard.svendsen@chemeng.ntnu.no or professor Olav Bolland, email: olav.bolland@ntnu.no.
Detailed information on our PhD programmes is found at http://www.ivt.ntnu.no/dr/e_index.php.
Applicants for the PhD-positions should have an MSc or similar degree within relevant science, engineering or technology areas. The fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis.
PhD research fellowships are awarded for a total of 3 or 4 years. Fellowships for 4 years include 25 % of teaching assistance at bachelor’s and master’s degree level. These duties are commonly distributed over the 4 years, with a larger proportion during the two first years.
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, in the State salary scale 45-47, gross NOK 353 000 to NOK 365 100 per annum (before tax). PhD candidates normally starts at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for a PhD position are obliged to engage on an organized research programme, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for PhD study. NTNU’s PhD-rules require a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html
NTNU’s objective is to increase the number of females in scientific positions. Female applicants are therefore encouraged to apply.
All applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English (in speaking and writing) and must indicate their level of language skills.
An application with a CV, certified copies of transcripts and reference letters should be submitted electronically through http://www.jobbnorge.no/, Preferably, we want the attachments in one file. Please mark your application with the specific area you are applying for as indicated above. Reference no is NT 53/08. Application deadline: 15 October 2008.
