PhD position Cognitive Neuroscience
Ph.D position Cognitive Neuroscience (F/M) (38 hours a week)
Vacancy number: 7-240
Job description:
Candidate will participate in the interdisciplinary Sound-In-Context (SIC) project (Auditory Cognition-Social Psychology-Neurophysiology-Acoustics). SIC is inspired by the idea that seemingly immediate responses to auditory stimuli (such as "loud!") may be moderated already by higher-ordered brain processes. SIC's general interest is in finding out how, and how early, non-auditory factors of exposure to environmental sound determine noise responses. As part of SIC, candidate will design, conduct, analyze and report the results of EEG-based experiments on how, and how early, social context of traffic sounds determines auditory processing of sound. She/he will attend international conferences to present and discuss her/his intermediary results. Thesis is based upon two or more first authored international journal articles.
Requirements:
A recent master's degree in cognitive (neuro)psychology or related field.
A strong motivation to do brain research with applied interests, i.e. finding out about best ways to reduce environmental noise exposure.
Prior experience with EEG measurements (ERP), good knowledge of statistical techniques.
Additional information about the job:
The Cognitive Psychology Unit of the Leiden University is home of the SIC-project. SIC-partners are Dutch (Groningen), Finnish (Helsinki), German (Munich), French (Paris) and Romanian (Bucharest). Although there may be occasional periods of working at SIC-partner institutes, the majority of the research will be conducted at Leiden. Facilities include EEG and fully equipped electrophysiological laboratory. PhD position has been made possible by a four-year grant from the Foundation PNL (Platform Dutch Aviation).
Organization:
The PhD student will conduct her/his research under supervision of Prof. Pieter Jan Stallen. See www.psychologie.leiden.edu , click 'organisation' – 'sections' – 'cognitive psychology' – 'staff'.
Conditions of employment:
The successful applicant will be appointed to the department of Psychology for a fixed-term period of 4 years, with continuation dependent upon an evaluation after 12 months. Gross salary will be € 1.956 per month in the first year, gradually rising to € 2.502 per month in the final year.
Preferred start of the project: November 1st, 2007 (Munich meeting nov. 8).
Inquiries:
